Breakaway cruise control

Is this throttle lock interchangeable between models of bikes? I have one on an ST1100 Honda and a V-Max, both of which I may sell to get an FJR and would like to not have to buy another one if I could use one of the two I already have.

Using specialty motorcycle parts from Home Depot, I think that I spent all of $3 for my breakaway throttle friction lock. A knob, nut, screw, washers, and some JB Weld.

Their website will tell you if the units will retro onto the fjr. IIRC they had a unique adapter for the fjr.

I believe it will not work/fit on FJR's with heated grips. :angry:

Happy to hear if anyone has found a 'work-a-round' for this issue. :blink:

Man! All of us with heated grips never get to play in any riendeer games. I'll keep the heated grips though. I'll find another way for cruise control.

Any cheaper suggestions?

Like I said, I'll try to post something tonight. I do have heated grips but it ought to work either way.

If the bike has factory installed heated grips it will not work. If you added heated grips there should not be a problem.

Vista Cruise? My personal UN-favorite: Throttlemeister?

Tons of options out there, heated grips or not. I love the VistaCruise throttle lock, Have one on each of my FJRs, including the one with heated grips.

Of course there is always the true cruise control, like the Audiovox, or MC Cruise.

Vista Cruise? My personal UN-favorite: Throttlemeister?

-1 on the TM. Had one on two different bikes. While they do work, they are a serious PITA to use. Any of the thumb lever flippy types have to be better than a Throttlemeister. Not convenient in the least.

I use only a Throttle Rocker, but have an AVCC sitting on the shelf for (potential) install, and have also considered trying a Vista Cruise.

This is what I came up with,

the bracket takes a little ingenuity, material and a vise, the rest is Vista. I didn't like the Throttlemister either.

It doesn't look like it'll work with heated grips either, I have after market ones on my Gen 1 and they look like they'd need to be cut down and there is no space for the wiring.

OK...somebody mention cheap cruise control....???

This has got to set the bar for cheapness. Use heavy duty coat hanger wire and it is free. Takes a moment to form the circle with needle nose pliers and/or a round piece of stock nearly the same size as the grip. Make the circle a bit smaller than the grip and leave space between the two outreaching legs. Slide it on over the grip and bring the two legs together sufficiently to grab the grip as the circle tightens up and hold them together with a tiewrap. Simply slide the leg down at the desired speed with your index finger to hole the throttle and rotate the throttle back to idle when done.

Even though I have an electronic cruise on the bike I leave this little throttle lock on the bike because it is so quick to use for a moment while you adjust your helmet or ????

This was the prototype. After getting it right I soldered the open ends together (I used brass welding rod) and slide a long piece of black shrink tubing over the legs to cover them. Hardly even see it.

It will work with heated (or most any kind of ) grip.

Nice job there. I've been looking for a solution like that for my '07 fjr with factory heated grips. The throttle cable housing is wider on my bike, but your idea can be modified to work around that. Got a few questions though.

1. Which model Vista Cruise is it that you have used?

2. Does it clamp over your Grip Puppies or to the grip underneath?

3. Is there any binding of the grip when the Vista is released and can you still turn the grip when the Vista is engaged?

4. Could you possibly provide a more detailed guide with pictures on how you did the mod in the Bin-O-Facts?

for anyone else that's interested:

1. Which model Vista Cruise did you use?

a. Not sure which model, sorry.

2. Does it clamp over your Grip Puppies or to the grip underneath?

a. No it doesn't grip over the puppies, my Vista clamps the grip underneath.

3. Is there any binding of the grip when the Vista is released and can you still turn the grip when the Vista is engaged?

a. No binding, my throttle turns freely and you can turn the throttle when it's applied, it's just very stiff.

So, that means that it also doesn't "lock" the throttle completely it just keeps it in place and very slowly backs off. It gives your hand a rest and that was my main objective.

NOTE - you might have read where others complain about the throttle spring tension and they remedy this by removing one of the two throttle return springs. Mine has both springs in place so I would suspect that my Vista would "lock" if one of these springs were removed. Frankly the throttle tension is not an issue with me.

Wombat, Nice bracket fab! ...of course having the advantage of viewing yours first before turning my mind [what remains of it] loose on the topic helps here, my thought is the fab could be further simplified by just using a longer bolt [thru the clamp] and an extra nut/washer to secure just the final [L-bend] of bar stock. Jestal's little trick is a sweet/simple/effective bit of brainstorming too!
