Spider problem ?

As expected the bike won't start .. There is no noise from fuel pump. I'm waiting for some dielectric grease to arrive and will pack the other spiders with grease when it arrives.
I would suggest going all the way and bypassing ALL the spiders and earthing the each spider block individually to the frame as I mentioned in my earlier post. Do not earth the two ECU spiders, just bypass the connector. I did this at around 40k miles, the bike now has 234k miles and I've NEVER had an issue since.

Yes there are two in the front one on each side.
No, actually there are 4 in the front, 2 on each side. 2 (1 left, 1 right) are accessible without removing the tank, in behind the headlight height adjusting knobs.

The other 2 front are tucked under the tank, forward. Left by the thermostat, right by the coolant pipe temperature sensor.

Hi rbentnail,

The photograph of a spider near the end of the coolant pipe, where the temperature sender transducer is, is a 5 volt S5 transducer negative.

There are 2 five volt spiders,S2 & S5 and should be isolated from the bikes 12 volt system.

Power is supplied via the ECU.

Be interested to see what would happen ???

Thanks Ken! I didn't mean to imply that it should be connected to ground, just that it is there and should be inspected and gooped up once in a while. I do it yearly for all 8 spiders while plastics & tank are off for other maintenance stuff: inspect for overheating, remove the cap, pull out the spider, add a little electrical goop and re-assemble. My '07 has never had "the recall" done and based on the last 7 yrs of inspections & minor connector maintenance probably never will.

 
The wires at the front under tank which I thought where the spider 4 wires are red and white .. When I grounded these wires I could turn over engine with kill switch off ? I don't think these wires are the spider 4 wires after all ! JamesK thanks for your comments will take your advice on board and see what comes of it. Many thanks

I don't know what red and white wires might be, but they're definitely not supposed to be connected to ground. Ground wires are only black with some black/white in the front area.

As far as I can see, red/white is an ignition supply that goes to various stuff. There's also some red/yellow wires to do wth the headlamp circuit that you might have thought was red/white ???

Under tank left or under tank right? L & R are determined as if you are sitting on the bike facing forward. Left id S4, right is S5. Can't help with colors, but I don't recall anything like that. I think it's time you STOP and take some pictures......

 
rbentnail and mcatrophy many thanks for the photos.. I have located all of these except for the one under the tank at top left hand corner .. when I opened up the harness covering I came across 5 or 6 wires crimped together which I thought where what used to be the spider at top left under tank but now I'm not sure they are (they are red and white) I've opened up the harness covering a bit more and as yet can't find any sign of that spider or wires joined together.

 
There may be a difference between your 2008 and our 2006/2007 machines, the wiring was changed a little for the 2008.

 
Not at all, rbentnail, the more people that know the better, and YES yes yes, treat the two 5 volt spiders. (even if you just re-seat the bridging piece)

The S2 spider, LHS of the throttle bodies, should have ALL 6 wires in the terminal Blue with Black trace and the S5, near the temp transducer, all wires Black with Blue trace.

Any other colour could be a factory thing, or a repair job ????

 
Update.. My bike does not appear to have a spider 4 connection and I cannot see any evidence of there ever being one. So far I have cut the wires and soldered them together on all but the S5 right hand side under the tank (when sitting on bike) (because there's not enough room to get to the wires) and S7 and S8 behind headlight panels because I'm not confident about taking off the front cowling and putting it back on again. Having done this there was no change to the original condition eg dash lights on and flashing fuel gauge and no power to anything. However when I ground either S3 (under tank left rear) and/or S6 (under glove box) all the dash lights go off and the front side lights come on and I have power to the flashers, the hazard lights, the main headlight, but not to the windscreen, horn or starter. I am curious about a four pin connector next to the S1 spider (beside the EUC) it looks like it should be connected to something ? And has the same coloured wires going into it as the spider. I will try and post a picture. I guess my next step is to take the plunge and attempt to remove the front cowling and cut and solder S7 and S8.

Look at S6 (left hand side near glovebox) and the non-spider connector near it. (As per the link in post #5) I had failures with both of these.

I've taken my '06 front fairing off, I made a pictorial "how-to" here, to replace stuff after the bike got blown over.

Not too difficult, a little fiddly in places. Note the use of tape to protect the upper side fairing panels from the front as you remove/replace it. Take good note of the headlamp adjustment cable positions.

Ok so took the plunge and removed front cowling thanks to Kaitsdad great post ..(broke two lugs in process) and have now soldered up S7 and S8 I have grounded S6,S7,S8 to the frame ... When I turn ignition key on now the red ABS and the fuel gauge flash .. But now I have power to the starter motor ! So the engine is turning. Ross Kean re the non spider connector near the S6 how did you fix this ? Did you cut the wires and bypass it ?

If you look at the picture of the socket in that thread, you can see that one of the pins is burned. I believe that it is a ground that carries quite a bit of current. I cut that wire on both sides of the connector and soldered (and heat-shrinked) a splice that by-passed the connector. The other wires in the connector looked good so I did not do anything with them.

Note: I wouldn't do anything with that unless there is some visible evidence of a problem. Make sure you look at the back side of the connector.

SUCCESS ! Thank you so much for everyone that posted on this topic EVERYTHING IS WORKING I'm so happy I could dance :0) I will post a summary of whole process in a day or two to help anyone who may experience the same issue. Thank you all again everyone that posted I could not have fixed this without your input.
