double solid lines a suggestion?

I had always thought it was odd that in some places there are signs saying no passing zone, even when there is a double solid line. Stealing this from another forum, this article says that in PA double solid lines are a suggestion! I have never heard that before.

I tried to do some internet research to see for which states this is true, but all I could get is page after page of accident reports for people crossing a double solid line(maybe the suggestion should be a strong suggestion). I can't believe that this is true everywhere, hard to believe it's true in PA.

It's a suggestion in Minnesota, just as it's suggested you pay the ticket you get for crossing them, after having had it suggested you pull over for the red lights behind you.

Interesting.....not even close to being a lawyer, but, from the info below, sounds like no passing zones must be indicated by pavment markings AND signs. Does no sign = suggestion rather than law? (bold text below was done to point out key points)

§ 3307. No-passing zones.(a) Establishment and marking.--The department and local authorities may determine those

portions of any highway under their respective jurisdictions where overtaking and passing or driving

on the left side of the roadway would be especially hazardous and shall by appropriate signs or

markings on the roadway indicate the beginning and end of such zones and when the signs or

markings are in place and clearly visible to an ordinarily observant person every driver of a vehicle

shall obey the directions of the signs or markings. Signs shall be placed to indicate the beginning and

end of each no-passing zone.

(B ) Compliance by drivers.--Where signs and markings are in place to define a no-passing zone

as set forth in subsection (a), no driver shall at any time drive on the left side of the roadway within

the no-passing zone or on the left side of any pavement striping designed to mark a no-passing zone

throughout its length.

Double YELLOW lines are always NO PASSING (oncoming lane is off limits), but the double WHITE lines are usually indicated to separate you from "same direction traffic" that has either its own direction-change coming soon, or a designated lane (ie toll/pass/diamond etc)! Just as the long white line that precedes an intersection is meant to "discourage random lane changes that close to an intersection... the white signifies "same direction traffic".

Good idea, I'm 20 miles from the PA border. Now all I need is a double solid and a LEO to pass. :lol:
