All right all you tough-guy posers.. how many of rode your fjr to work all this week? I may be whinin' but at least I'm riding! So there! :D
Nowwwww D, I rode my bike every day this week. Did almost four hours yesterday because I played hookie after lunch and went back to the office late.

Of course, it has been in the 70s here for a solid week. Please try to keep that damn cold air out there for a change. You guys always send us crap when you're done with it. You know...

Weather blows east,

I haven't stopped riding to work yet. One morning last week it was 18°F and several others it was in the low 20s, in the dark, at 5:30 a of m. This Monday morning was perhaps a bit of poor judgment because the roads were wet and the temperature was right at 32° and there was some icing in places :eek: Tuesday was dry going in and rain coming home with the temp plunging. I rode in and back in the rain yesterday but it was all the way up to 55 degrees!. Rode in to work in the rain this morning but had a nice ride home.

If I go directly to work it is 25 miles with 23.8 of the miles through farm land with lakes and rivers. I get to watch the sun rise over the mountains with mist on the lakes and fog in the valleys. Very nice. Coming home the only thing that shortens up my ride these days is darkness, not much to see in the dark. It's hunting season and the hunters have the wild life on the move so I see a lot of critters on or near the roads, also not good in the dark.

I'm predicting she'll hook up with Kid Rock next. He seems like a logical (albeit small) step up the evolutionary ladder from K-Fed.

Well, as I only drive to work once every six days, and it's only 15 minutes in heavy traffic, I can ride pretty much all week WITHOUT going to work. :bleh:
But to answer your question, I didn't ride to work last shift. We had our semi-annual curbside cleanup and all the cage parking in front of my house was occupied with crap. Add a recently acquired tarp tent structure in the driveway, and it only left room for one car outside the garage, which is currently doing mini-storage duty except for a spot large enough to park the FJR. How's that for an excuse?

Ding Ding! We have a WinnAh! Ionbeam, you get the award for tough guy commuter this week.. you beat my paltry 20 degrees F 2 degrees and threw in a dose of rain too.. You over achiever you.. My ride is a bit longer, 45 minutes if I haul butt (80+). I leave the house waaay before sunrise too, it's still dark when I arrive. Then I get to go home in the dark but at least its warmer. I'm thinking come Christmas /New Year time :santa: it's time to tear the plastic off (she's still a virgin) :moil: and wire up the electrics... :cold: ...and I can't ride in the rain because 1) my dirt road is impassable and 2) I'm a Candy Butt Association member.. I might melt :p .

I rode my other sickle [suzuki 700] but yeah I rode all 5 days this week. Little nippy in the early a.m. here in So-Cal.

I'm in the car at the first rainfall. Bike+wet roads+darkness+poor visibility+freeway traffic = bad combination.

 
I must admit I wimped out again today.. Big ol duelie truck with heater and radio and coffee and cruise control and windshield wipers and.. 17.8 mpg :dribble:

I'm very happy with the cycleport/motoport outfit. Toe said it right that the mesh stuff is versatile.I rode up from the SF Bay Area to Oregon City to pay a visit to the fine folks at GP Suspension last Wednesday. It's about a 12 hour drive up there, and my concern wasn't in staying warm but in staying off the ice (the passes by Mt. Shasta and Mt. Ashland are high enough that if it's raining in the region, it's snowing there). Wore:

  • my old aria helmet with a fog city shield insert,
  • ultra II air mesh kevlar jacket, rain and thermal liners over a t-shirt,
  • an old pair of Hondaline winter gloves with rain covers (to cut the wind),
  • air mesh kevlar pants with rain liner over jeans and long johns,
  • heavy wool socks and Oxtar Jupiter boots,
  • and a neck warmer (rule #1: expose no skin).
I rode in temperatures that ranged between 25 degrees over the passes up to almost 40 degrees in the low lands, with some rain and fog, but no ice. (The Fog City insert is a godsend in cold weather). On the ride home on Friday, things warmed up a bit through the Sacramento valley, so I took out the thermal liner and put on lighter gloves. This all worked quite well, giving me a warm and water proof outfit without the obvious downside of wearing electric clothing: you're not at the edge of comfort or survival if you breakdown in the middle of nowhere. I'd probably add passive stuff like hand and foot guards if I rode often in colder climes.YMMV. ;)

Impressive.. no electrics.. and 25 to 40 over 12 hours will suck the heat out of you.. Still, I'm wiring Crzy8 for elecrics ASAP. If I get stuck / broke down I'll call Triple AAA to resuce my sorry ass. ASSuming the cell has reception..
