cruse control

I recently bought a new 2008 FJR1300. What's your experience with the Audiovox cruise control? For those of you with a cruise control of some kind, do you use it much? I have used a cramp-buster in the past, with good success. Is there any point in messing around with the bike innards to install a true cruise control?

I wish I had a real cruise control. I have one of those thumb lock type and its crap but better that nothing. One of these days I will try to get the cheap flushed out of my system and buy a real one.

I don't know where you live, but I've had plain throttle locks while living in Florida. They work ok there except for the freeway overpasses where you slow down and then speed up. In more hilly terrain, throttle locks are a pain for extended use but are fine for short breaks for the right hand.

With that said, I installed the Audiovox cruise control on my 07 and absolutely love it. It's been working fine for a year now and others have many years of operation on theirs. I went with the beautifully crafted Skyway switch housing which gives it a factory installed look, but you can go much cheaper with home-made brackets. So for $100 to 200 you can have a top notch electronic cruise control on your bike.

My 04 FJR that I bought 2 weeks ago came with the Audiovox CC.

I don't get much of a chance to use it though. I also have the CC on the Harley Ultra Classic and use it all of the time.

It is great on the road when you are not following someone where you have to match someone's speed.

For the price, if you go on long trips, it would be worth it IMO.

I LOVE my AVCC!!!!!! I waited way too long to get it installed. Beats the hell out of the throttle lock for comfortable LD riding.

yep, couldn't live without my AVCC for my frequent interstate riding and also use my throttlemeister throttle lock as well other times.

it's a no brainer to me now that I have it and it works so well

I'm an upsidedown kinda guy (control pad on left side and I wanted the set-resume buttons nearest my left thumb)

Thanks to all of your for your replies. Whose installation instructions did you use? Did you make your own vacuum chamber, or buy one from Murphs?How long did the installation take?

I cheated:

Smitty install, about 1.5 hours, I supplied the AVCC from Whitney, he supplied all the other parts/canister. It was the easiest farkle I have done... have had done... have paid for! :dribble:

This should help you get started, it helped me alot

I ended up using a fuel filter for canister, one vac connection to number 3 cylinder with 1 check valve

The Murphs vac chamber is the AV stock one and is much too big - quite a few have no vac chamber at all, but I recommend it

If not, use all four vac connections with 4 check valves so the tubing act as adequate vac canister

Walter Fooshee in Panama City did my install with my assistance as he's done a few; Gen I's without ABS like mine are easiest as there's plenty room for the unit and the vac canister. Took us 6 hours, but getting the glove compartment out of the left top panels was a bear as one of the push in rivet thingys was glued in tight and we spendt 45 minutes wrestling with it.

Also took 1.5 hours to do a TBS and change the plugs to Iridiums, so total with testing and adjusting the chain after each test (three tests) was 3.5 hours total, I would say.

avcc, self install. no vacume canister. haven't needed one so far. set aside a day to do it for the first time.

Tech day in PNW at AuburnFJR's place... Spent several long hours today with the stellar help of EscapeFJRst tearing the top off the bike preparing to install the AV CC on my 05 ABS and with time running out, we concluded that space was not our friend for servo or canister location so we guessed that the servo could go under the seat and the canister somewhere along the left rear frame rail. We zipped up our reconnaisance and saved the install for another day with an earlier start. Did manage to install new Iridiums and did a TBS which has not moved beyond tolerances since day one. Always a good day when the bike immed starts after having that scary (to me) fuel rail off. Also have Skyways bracket for the control. Any Gen I ABS owners who have done this install want to share locations for servo and canister?

I didn't want to loose the tool tray space and wasn't going to the trouble that V65 did to place his CC here, but when Ionbeam showed pics of the CC servo disassembled I popped my unit apart into the 3 pieces and finagled them in there, one piece at a time and then snapped them back together.

The caveat being that this isn't for the faint of heart, and your mitts need to fit in there and not be arthritic enough to squeeze the pieces back together.

That said, I'm tickled pink with the CC on my 05 with abs.

I have one of those, but don't have the tools or bravery to tear into my $15K bike to install it. Gotta find a local shop because the dealer service guy won't touch it.

I installed an AVCC on my 2005 and used it on virtually every ride. Most days I considered it to be my favorite farkle. I haven't gotten around to installing one on my '07AE and I miss it every time I take to the highway. I have the toggle switches on order (so I won't be stuck using the fugly control pad) and as soon as they get here I'm tearing into it.

Sometimes people who have never had a real cruise control on their bike ask what the big deal is, but those who have done it know what the big deal is.

It was definitely worth it for me, but I also enjoy working on my bike. I use it any time on on the freeway with no nearby traffic. I went the extra mile with my installation and used all 4 cylinders for the vacuum source with 4 check valves, an easy home-made vacuum reservoir, all taking up absolutely zero storage space: https://www.fjrforum.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=114094
