Klinging noice, new cylinderhead

HI everybody

I have a problem with my bike.

I had a ticker and got a new cylinderhead in december 2005. Here in Finland we have winter now so I have not driven it at all.

The engine has a metallic noice on the right side, you can hear it at 2500 rpm, local yamaha said it is the loose camchaft chain and that the noice well stop after a few miles.

What do you think, is it possible that it is true?????

Well, thats the side the chain is on, as well as the tensioner, which has been known to have occasional issues. It's an automatic adjuster, and it sounds like it isn't. Might wanna reset it, according to the procedure shown in the manual, and if still not working, back to the dealer you go.

I'm calling ******** on that.

A loose camchain likely isn't going to just "get better" on it's own. The camchain adjuster should take out any slack in the chain (and it's normal to have some) on an ongoing basis. It should not be loose after a rebuild. The adjuster should always have tension on the chain.

The adjuster is probably stuck if the chain is loose. There were a few documented cases of this on the Int'l FJR forum (joos' site), so rather than a loose camchain, I may suggest a faulty cam chain adjuster. Or the shop did not properly set the chain tensioner to do it's job.

The noise it should make if the chain is either worn out or the adjuster is bad/misadjusted would sound like a a busy bowling alley or imagine if you can taking about 50 feet of chain and dragging it across a tile floor with marbles trapped between the chain links.

Thanks to you all, I will get a new tensioner and I hope it will do the trick to make the noice go away. I have just 21000 km on the ODO so the engine schould be OK and the warranty is still valid.

I defintiely would not do anything to the bike right now.

They all make noise over on that side. You are listening to it inside, in the garage, right. Mechanical sounds get magnified there. And, the bike is not being warmed up fully so all the parts aren't in the exact right places/conditions. And, guessing here, I'll bet you are "Overyly Sensitive" to "noises" since you just went throught the trauma of a broken bike - Right Over There.

Let the shop do it. Especially if you still have warrantee coverage. Even if not, if they do it and some question arises, even about a recurrance of Ticking, they don't get to point fingers at YOU.

I guess you want everything ready for your short Riding Season, right? Wait until just before Riding Season starts, when the roads are clear of ice but still wet. Take the bike out for "long" ride. Then check it.

Why not ride on over to the dealer and have THEM check it?

If anything is in fact amiss, it won't dig into your quality riding time.
