replaced camchain and tensioner

i had that cam chain noise,,so i took it in thinking i was still under extended warranty,,well it turns out that a 3 yr extended warranty is 2yrs plus the factory warranty of 1 yr,,bunch of ****,,anyway the warranty ran out in may,,they had the bike tore down,,so i told them to change the cam chain and tensioner $120 in parts and 5hrs labor ,,they owed me for an ignition switch i installed and the labor time it takes to install it,,which was $143 for the switch and 2 hours labor,,yamaha payed for the parts,,so i payed the $268 labor difference,,the noise is gone,,bike runs good,,but i cant see anything wrong with the tensioner,,and the chain doesnt look that worn,,i took the tensioner apart and it is a ****** method ,the spring n everthing looked ok,,,i am thinking either they wind it to tight n the spring breaks n it threads back in becoming loose,,or the spring isnt wound tight enough n the plunger doesnt come out all the way,,,it sounds good runs cherry,,no excess noise

Not sure if you're pissed you paid $268 or you're glad you paid $268 for the job. My eyes still hurt from reading your post.

HOWEVER, if you're pissed, I'll make you a deal.....I'll send you the $268...you keep your new chain and CCT, and send me your cylinder head.

Ask me....JUST ASK ME...if I'd fork over $268 to not have airmailed 12 out of 16 valves. :angry:

Oh, cam chains (and chains in general) lose more of their service life to stretch than to wear, so a cursory "look" ain't no yardstick to measure by.

Chain wear causes the chain to become longer, misnamed stretching. There is a specific way to measure a circular chain for length and this is how you determine if the chain is at or past service length.

If your engine was noisy it was because the chain had worn and became longer, and the automatic tensioning from the CCT did not automatically take up the slack.

The CCT plunger starts life just under half way extended and over the life of the cam chain will only extend 1/4 to 1/2 inch farther. When testing the CCT, the area where you should have felt for uniform, strong force was from slightly under half way extended to just over half way extended.

It sure seems that there should be a better design for the CCT.

Consider what you paid to be an insurance policy against a potential $2,000 to $4,000 repair bill.

Do you think, perhaps, a yardstick, or (this being a yamaha) a meterstick, might be a better measure of cam chain 'stretch' than ye olde eyeball?

Hasn't anyone on the forum volunteered to park their behind a dump truck so that it can be totaled (without having someone have to get into an accident, that we don't want) so they can get a new one with the insurance money, and you can get he head from their wreck?

There must be someone that wants, say, a color swap and has really good insurance that can work out some kinda deal with you. Are gen 1 and gen 2 heads fully interchangeable?

CCT replacement is way over-rated. Why you want to go and do a thing like that?
