so the wife's bike won't start...sometimes. 05 ABS.

we were going to do a trip out to knoxville, and the morning of I ran down and jumped on it, hit the starter button and the engine just spun. No start. 19 is displayed on the dash LCD. We took the car to Knox, came back 2 days later and it starts fine, like nothing had ever happened. Two days after that, back to spin-no start, code 19.

I had it into the dealer, he says "yea, sidestand switch"...they replaced that and the clutch switch ($267 total)..I go pick it up, it starts fine, runs great. Park it in the yard, smile all the way into the house.

Yesterday evening I go to pull it into the basement, guess what. Spin no start, code 19.

I've been laid off for a year tomorrow, got no more money for the dealer..any ideas? Thanks in advance..I tried to search, it didn't like the fact that one of my search terms was less than 3 characters, so my apologies if there's some search kung-fu I'm missing.

diAG Codes 101 >>CLICK<<

Code 19 is the sidestand code and will produce a no crank/no spin the starter situation. If the switch was really changed, check the connector or wiring. It could be a problem at the Starter Cut Off Relay. To help with the troubleshooting, the next time you have a Code 19/no start, try the following. Ya, it's fiddly but it will help diagnose the problem. The sidestand switch, clutch switch and neutral light all come together at the Starter Cut Off Relay.

With the sidestand up, in neutral and the clutch pulled in, will it spin the starter motor? (To the long time Forum people, I know that the clutch switch should not be in play in this situation.)

With the sidestand up, in gear with the clutch pulled in, will it spin the starter motor?

With the sidestand up, in neutral will it spin the starter motor?

With the sidestand down, in neutral and the clutch pulled in, will it spin the starter motor?

With the sidestand down, in gear with the clutch pulled in, will it spin the starter motor?

man, I sincerely appreciate it. I'll try these and report results later on tonight.

"hit the starter button and the engine just spun. No start. 19 is displayed on the dash LCD."

BTDT, The ignition switch contacts that channel the safety interlocks back to the ECU are dirty.

Cycle the key switch a few times until you can spray some Pro Gold into the weep hole at the bottom of the ignition switch, with the bars full left the hole is accessible with the red spray tube.

Mine has been OK since I did this.

YMMV.

SkooterG had a similar thing happen in Death Valley... The bike would not fire, Just crank over. We push started him and it was fine after that. What are the odds that the Fuel Injection pumped too much fuel in the cylinders causing it to flood? :dntknw:

I get an F for reading. I see the engine does spin so the no start is unrelated to the Code 19 or the Starter Cut Off Relay, either would prevent the starter motor from engaging.

Zorlac may have the correct solution, cleaning the ignition switch contacts can't hurt.

To Galaxy Blue's suggestion, for some reason the FJR is somewhat prone to symptoms like a flooded engine, just not to the frequency that hux seems to be having. Treat it just like you would a flooded engine, hold the throttle wide open and crank in 3-5 second bursts. It could take more than 5 tries before you get it to sputter into life.

hey, no worries man. I completely missed the fact that you were asking me if the starter spins and not if it starts :) The link you posted with the codes is worth MY weight in gold, though, so thanks a ton for that.

So I finally found the weep hole mentioned by Zorlac and doused it with some contact cleaner and guess what? Fired right up. I think the repairs were legit by the dealer, because we had some issues with the sidestand last season, but I think Zorlac nailed the *actual problem* on the head.

The wife is happy - and she thinks *I* fixed it. gonna be a good night! :)

Beers on me, fellas, if yer ever in NC.

Same thing just happened to me (on the '03 or '10-7)... Started Up and then Bam Off (I think when I put it in Gear with the Side Stand Up) -Code 19 w/Yellow Light.

Put on Center Stand with Side Stand Up and it Started Right Up.

Used Contact Cleaner both on the Side Stand Switch and the Ignition Switch... and it seems all is good.
