My good friend HotRodZilla recently pointed out to his Papa Chuy that there is something called a digital camera out there. Is anybody on our FJR Forum familiar with these newfangled things? I am seriously thinking of retiring my Kodak Brownie camera I bought in 1956 with my earnings as a paper boy!

I prefer to spend my spare money on women, alcohol, women, food, women, motorcycle trips and women; but, not necessarily in that order! So is there a digital camera, well suited to taking photos of Motorcycle Expeditions for under $250, that you fine folks of our FJR Forum can recommend to Chuy Viejo?

If I am daydreaming (or stoned!) regarding the acquisition of a competent M/C friendly digital camera for under $250, is their a perfect digital camera for under $500 that you would recommend? Remember, being Irish I am naturally cheap: Copper wire was invented by two Paddies fighting over a penny!

You may post your M/C digital camera advice, recommendation and guidance here; or call BeemerDonS at 480-440-4666; or post me at [email protected] Keep your eyes on the For Sale listings, here soon: FOR SALE - 1956 Kodak Brownie Camera, Rare Cub Scouts Edition Model, with case!

I use a Sony Cybershot with a decent zoom and 10 Megapixals. It is compact and easy to use with good results... I believe it is in your price range... You might want to consider if you're planning on taking pictures while riding, and look at the shutter button and how easy it is to use with a glove on. Old Michael has several point and shoot digitals and he could advise you on different features. You Irish are really quick to pick up on trends! Rich

Thank you, Rich! I will PM our Old Michael. It was Mick that told me all about these cell phone thing-a-ma-jigs that people are using these days!

Don +100 on the Sony Cybershot. This little cameras are like computers used to be. They have come down in price and have a huge increase in Megapixels (the amount of lines of resolution). The link below shows a wonderful camera under the price of $250.

Sony Cybershot w/ 14.1 megapixels

You will then need at least one Sony card (Memory Stick Pro Duo). I reccommend at least one (1) 8gb card that will hold many, many photos with the camera set on HQ. The link below will take you to one for about $25.

Memory Stick Pro Duo

Next I would also suggest a case to carry your canera in. I would suggest you get one made for your camera that you can carry either on your belt, your tank bag or just about anywhere else. It will safely hold your camera, an extra memory stick and even an extra battery for later on down the road. See link below for a case that is under $10.

Camera case

With one 8gb card, the single battery the camera comes with and this small case, you will be able to take your camera on a three day trip and not have to worry about recharging the battery or filling your card. These little Sony's turn on very fast, take great pics, very easy to operate and offer many cool features you will learn to use as you become used to the cameraa. You can also take video. An 8gb card will hold probably 300+ pictures on HQ without having to dump your pics. But with a usb card reader and your cooll new laptop, you could also dump your pics in just a few minutes once you become more like OM and take hundreds of photos. Or you could purchase more cards and an extra battery. But for now, a single card mentioned and the battery it comes with will serve you well and this camera will be super easy to use.

And then you could buy a GPS and really enjoy traveling by M/C.

So how much ya want for the Brownie? Can you still get that stuff called 'film'?

I'm partial to my older Panasonic Lumix which has excellent color rendition, big 10x Leica lens for those scenery shots (don't like the 3x cameras), and good battery life. Great pictures, and simple to use (no complicated menus). Plus it has a real lens cap that won't get damaged like those shutter style caps, but you might be able to find a cap to go over them. The newer Lumix are thinner, faster. With the resolution set on 2MP, each picture is about 500k or so, so even a 2GB card will hold lots, but of course you can go bigger these days. Because mine is older, it has a 2GB card size limit.

Hey Don I've got a Sony CyberShot as well 12.1 pix. The shots I took in Colorado, the ride with Rushes and Chris in Arkansas were with the Sony camera. Its also the one I'm taking to Mexico with us. An 8GB card will hold about 1600 shots.

You might want to consider "shock and water" resistant like this one

Clicky

You don't have to worry about a passing rainstorm messing with your camera. My wife uses one on the back and she can get the action shots in any weather without worry. Also, being we are on bikes and not in a studio, the shock resistant part can be important too.

+1 on the Big Buttons comment, don't know how many shots I've missed fumbling for either the "on" or the "shoot" button with my gloves on

Thanks Scott, Ray, Dan and Rich! Unless those namby-pambies HotRodZilla and Old Michael chime in here with something totally different, I am going with the Sony CyberShot. Big-D, thank you for the discounted price links; I will buy from them! I am not necessarily cheap, but I will fart on a rock to save the grease!!!

I'm deferring to OM on things photog....

But, I will recommend that whatever cam you buy has OPTICAL image stabilization, given the way it will be used.

I am going to weigh in on this quandry at this time and space. My "interest" is to find/buy a (probably used) Canon Digital Camera body, for the through the lens reflex lenses that I already have with my Canon film camera body.

Any leads?

PM sent, Beemerdee.

You Irish are really quick to pick up on trends!
Don, advise your Danish friend that we'll not tolerate his hurtful sarcasm.

(The wet climate seems to have made him cranky and little bitter, don't you think?)
Slainte, Mick; Thank You! Here is a nice Danish joke as payment for your assistance: Angering The Irish!

Three Danes were in a bar and spotted an Irishman. So, one of the Danes walked over to the Irishman, tapped him on the shoulder, and said, "Hey, I hear your St. Patrick was a drunken loser." "Oh really, hmm, didn't know that. "Puzzled, the Dane walked back to his buddies. "I told him St. Patrick was a loser, and he didn't care. " The second Dane remarked, "You just don't know how to set him off...watch and learn." So, the second Dane walked over to the Irishman, tapped him on the shoulder and said, "Hey, I hear your St. Patrick was lying, cheating, idiotic, low-life scum!" "Oh really, hmm, didn't know that. "Shocked beyond belief, the Dane went back to his buddies. "You're right. He's unshakable! "The third Dane remarked, "Boys, I'll really tick him off... just watch." So the third Dane walked over to the Irishman, tapped him on the shoulder and said, "I hear St. Patrick was Danish!" "Yeah, that's what your buddies were trying to tell me."

Sooooo.... you going with the Canon ? ;)
Hi Beautiful, Old Michael suggested to me to go to a Best Buy store and try them all out (one here in the Chandler Mall). OM recommended bringing in the left hand of my favorite riding gloves and see how they operate shooting on the fly. I'd like to have the opportunity to point and shoot while on the move. Since I ride with SkooterG on a regular basis, there is a really good chance for an opportunity to snap him and his FJR flying through the air! Mick also recommended an extended warranty purchase.

He's a big *****... He hasn't the balls nor the knowhow to post it up anyway :blum:

I think I might have to have a talk with that kid...

Extended warrantly on a point & shoot ? No kidding .....

The try-with-the-glove-on thing is a good idea. (that's why we pay OM the big bucks, I guess)

I'm on my 3rd Canon PowerShot or whatever it's called. LOVED the first 2. This one ---- not so much. I was hoping when it hit the highway after coming off its lanyard that it was history. Nope

So....I think I'll go looking for a 4th but will be more open-minded this time (to a different brand).

Following this thread with interest

Keep on keepin' on ! :D
