Fiamm Dual HF-90 High Performance Horns Kit

Probably a dumb question but maybe this'll help someone else besides me!

Got the subject horns the other day from RideSafe. Quick service. Horns came with wiring, connectors, and an inline fuze (and relay). Here's how I figure to wire them:

- Wire the 2 existing horn (+) wires together and to the relay

- Wire the 2 existing horn (-) wires together and to the relay

- Relay to horns (+)

- Horns (-) wire together to ground (will run to my BlueSea)

- BlueSea (+) to relay

Okay - horns/relay have power; horns/relay are grounded; I have an empty 5th pin on the relay - what goes there?

BTW, horns look well made (made in India so ya know they're good!). The horns are shaped like stock but are "larger." Will let all know how they fit, sound, etc once done and tested.

On SPST NO (normally open) relays some have two that are connected together.

On SPDT NO/NC (normally closed) relays there is one NO and one NC.

My five terminal 12V 30A relay has the following terminals:

85 -- one side of coil

86 -- other side of coil

87 -- one side of normally open contact

87 -- one side of normally open contact

The two 87's are connected/bussed together inside the relay

30 -- other side of normally open contact

Your relay may have this configuration. With this layout the switched wire to each horn would have a separate connection to the relay.

BTW, horns look well made (made in India so ya know they're good!).  The horns are shaped like stock but are "larger."  Will let all know how they fit, sound, etc once done and tested.

Do you think they'd sound good on a Corolla? Ours has dorked horns right now. What? You don't have 'em installed yet? What's the holdup? Tick tock, tick tock!

Stuck my Vista Cruise on last night - stupid easy! Leaving in a few minutes to ride out to see my daughter at James Madison U (Harrisonburg). Think I'll visit her and then take a run west on 33 - I remember it as a good road from our 1st Old Dominion ride! I'll get to the horns soon as I can - sometimes I gotta walk around a project a few times before I just say, the hell with it, and dive it and get it done!

Understood by the man who still has HID kit and cruise control in the "to-do box".

1 last question for the electrical brains of the forum - does the distance from the power source to the horns make any difference to the noise level produced?

1. Run from the battery to the relay

2. Run from my BlueSea (way, way, in the back under the pillion seat) to the relay

I clearly understand that number 2 (number 2 above, not doody) introduces multiple chances for failure and for that reason alone is probably a poor choice for wiring horns, I just wanted to know!

3. Just get the FJRandy harness and be done with it.

If you go with long runs, make sure you have heavy enough wire from the battery to the terminal block and from there to the horns. The longer the run, the heavier the wire (all else being equal).

Thanks Bob. Have my BlueSea wired with 10 ga wire and will use 12 or 14 for the horns. As to Randy's harness, I would but these horns came with all the parts and I don't really want to spend another $35 for something I have - yeah I have to put it together, but gotta save money somewhere.

Okay, I bought some. Not sure yet if they'll wind up on the bike or the Corolla. Test results will determine their final application. Hmmm, maybe I should have waited until I test drove the FJ Cruiser. It might need a set of better horns as well.

You would if you knew how much of a voltage drop you're creating with that long wire run.

BTW.....center pin on an SPDT relay is #87a. Unused. And you only need to hook up ONE side of the fact. horn wires to make it work.

Ya know Randy, I've still got envelope with your address on it sitting on my kitchen counter. If these horns didn't come with all the parts I'd get your harness in a heartbeat.

Appreciate the tip on the factory horn wires - I was planning to hook 'em both to the relay. As to the voltage drop, I'll assume that means it's better to hook straight to the battery vice back to the BlueSea - I'll do that!

When doing the Magnum Blaster installation, I found "Highway Blasters" locally. Thinking it was the same as the MB, I bought them only to find that they weren't as powerful. Instead of taking them back (if you can on electrical stuff that's been installed), I replaced my OEM horns on the 96 GMC truck. Even though the Highway Blasters were not as robust as the Magnums, they were still louder than the OEM truck horns.

I did the opposite. When the MB's showed up I figured they were too big, so I took the Fiamm freeway blasters off my Land Cruiser and put 'em on the bike (with no plastic trimming necessary), then moved the MB's to the Cruiser. Now I'll probably put the new Fiamms on the bike and move the old ones to the Corolla, depending on how the new ones sound.

I installed a set of these today. That's the good news. Bad news is, they're probably coming back off. They sound pretty much how I thought they would, like a really loud motorcycle horn. I'll check 'em out on the road to make sure first, but I'm pretty sure they're destined for the Corolla.

I much prefer my Fiamm freeway blasters. They're plenty loud, and don't sound like no motorcycle.

I don't think you'll be scaring anybody back into their lane or out of a few years of lifespan with these, but YMMV.

The Fiamm HF-90 is what SHOULD have come stock on the FJR, IMO.

Jim, run 10 ga minimum from the batt + to pin 30 on the relay, fused at 20 amps.

Run two 12 ga wires from pin 87 one to each horn +.

Run two 12 ga ground wires from the batt neg terminal one to each horn neg.

Run 85 and 86 pins to the fact. horn wiring. Polarity on that doesn't matter.

This is the wiring setup I use on my harness. Only difference being the quality Bosch relay instead of the cheap junk that comes with the horns.

If you want the most output, ALWAYS run the shortest distance and largest wire possible. Except for pins 85 and 86. Wire size doesn't affect perfomance on those two. 18 ga is plenty.
