Man, today was a lovely day for a ride. . . the first in about 5 weeks, and it made me think of a question that I had meant to present to you guys before, and it had slipped my mind. Is the charging unit (stator?) for our bikes like an alternator, which I think puts out pretty much the same charge no matter the rpms, or is it like the old generators which put out current that is rpm dependent? And, if they're rpm dependent, what is the point that they start to really put out the charge? As usual, thanks in advance!

The charging system in our FJR is an alternating generator. It does not put out full power until 5k rpm, there after current output is flat. The stator/rotor produces a three phase alternating voltage which gets rectified, regulated and sent to the battery.

Older generators were alternators too. How the coils of the stator got excited and then became DC varied.
