Check around any endurance rally. The overwhelming choice of riders who ride many miles in many states through many different environments (rural, urban, remote) is the Valentine 1.

Funky things like tagging a frequent speed trap is pretty useless because, if you ride that area often enough to use it, you'll already know they are watching/gunning the area and not need the detector to remember for you.

Using GPS to tag false signals at the cost of ping direction info is equally a lossy choice. Again, when riding a routine path, bogie counts will do that (the false was 1 source every day, the cop hiding in the shadow of the false is source 2... time to slow down).

The point is that none of this is very useful when on a ride that is new and/or not repeated or repeated rarely. Ping LOCATION is infinitely more valuable.

Locator arrows are highly useful as they not only let you know there's something somewhere around you, but WHERE that (those) something(s) is (are). Many's a time a cop ahead left the main road only to pull back in behind the rider hoping to snag them after they thought it was safe again. That the locator actively shows that sneak attack, is worth a LOT.

I'm leaning towards a refurbished Passport 8500 X50 (come with factory warranty). While I'd like to get A Valentine they are expensive and the Passport provides the similar coverage without the directional attributes. I agree tagging spots is probably worthless. I found a Valentine 1 on ebay, If I can't get it at a price comparable to the Passport (I'd pay a little more), I think I'll go with the passport.

While we're on the subject, why not just get a radar/lidar jammer?

While not Technically illegal, best look at this link on jamming devices in Illinois.

Illinois Jamming Laws

Because :assassin:

Check out Radar Roy too.

edit to include Illinois statues on Jamming devices.

If buying used, get a SN and check with Valentine. They will confirm that the registration is legit (not stolen) and it will be able to xfered to you as the new owner.

Radar jammers are illegal in all 50 under the the FCC which controls radio waves. Laser jammers are selectively illegal by state laws but generally considered legal by the FDA which regulates light. Both types of jammers are illegal in Illinois.

Ya gotta admit it would be kinda fun to short out their circuitry as you fly by...

I'd guess that those that say that "tagging spots is probably worthless" have never used the Escort 9500 ix! This feature is what makes it so sweet when you're riding in areas that you often ride. I'd agree it's not much value when you pass through an area only once, but it is very valuable otherwise!

I' was looking for actual long term user experience.
If only you had asked that actual question instead of the one you did. ;) It would have been far less NEPRT-likely. Maybe next time you'll ask it and won't kill this guy.

Poor little guy!

Disagree. You will find an equal spattering of Valentines and Escorts. :p

After my $280 speeding ticket I think it's time to buy one. I did a couple searches but the threads I came up with were dated.

So, Best one? I don't care if it's not bike specific, I can always stick it in something like an otter box.

This should probably go into NERPT.
Currently use an escort Redline model velcroed to the top of the front brake fluid container. It is wired to a " screamer" aux. speaker which is audible even with the earplugs.Makes one aware of just how much radar is out there. Read the manual and become VERY familiar with whatever unit selected. If you are flagrant in urban areas not much helps.

a misunderstanding. if one detector had all the mentioned features and another was missing a logging function (but had the locator function like the other top of the line), then get the one with all the features. if one has a locator and one a logger, then go for the locator. it will always help while a logger only works on repeated routes that can be extrapolated with a bogie counter and paying attention along the repeated route.

I was thinking more about where I live, in the city, where I already know where all the traps are. It could be helpful as a reminder or to tag the annoying red light cameras that give you a ticket if you don't come to a complete stop before turning right on red, but again I already know where those are. So, "worthless" was probably not what I should have said. Less useful for me describes it better. The locator sounds useful for me, but given that I can get a unit comparable in every other way to the Valentine 1 for $200 less I'll probably go with that. I'll just have to be more cautious about the sneak attack bastages.

Oh, and it has a logger :)

I think I'm confused, and maybe confusing you. The feature that is so cool on the 9500 ix involves the ability of the device to filter out signals that are false (not LEO's) and recurring. For example, garage door openers, motion sensors, etc.. that emit radar waves of various types. The 9500 ix filters these out via their location determined by GPS. If the unit detects the exact same signal at the exact same location three times, it will ignore the signal in the future and not alert you. This works extremely well! It also "knows" where red light cameras, etc are, but I don't ever need this feature where I have traveled (so far). So, on routes that you repeatedly ride, you will typically only be alerted when it really is a LEO.

Hopefully I've explained myself a little better?

yeah. i kept telling myself until i got nailed for 92 in a 70. that was much more than the difference. after paying that cash money, biding my time on probation for 6 months, and spending countless hours on the phone and sending notarized letters by certified mail to the remote court, i learned my lesson. i got a V1 and haven't looked back.
