On the FJR, when you open the side vents what does that do? Does it make the passenger warmer, cooler; does it make the bike cooler?

Thanks.

As the theory goes, if the vents are out more warm air is allowed to reach the riders legs. Vents in, blocks the warm air and sends it away from the rider. So...vents out for winter and vents in for summer. FWIW I can't tell any difference on my '06 when in full gear and moving at speed...

Escapefjrtist - TO be honest, I cant tell the differenence as well. I was hoping that vents in or out would keep the bike running cooler.

Ok, ask yourself this question: "When I raise my windscreen, what does it do?" The answer should be something to the effect of, "the air goes up, out and over", correct? So think of the "vents" (a misnomer if there ever was one) as airfoils - just like your windscreen. They direct air out and away from the rider when open (perfect for cool weather riding), and allow unrestricted airflow when closed (perfect for warm weather riding). Want proof? Ride without gear in 40-ish weather. Ride with the vents open, ride with the vents closed. You'll get the idea really quickly.

As an aside, the "vents" (there's that word again...) should not - unless there's some type of venturi effect created when open(?), have any impact on engine temperature at all. It's still a solid piece of plastic behind them without any form of "venting" inlets (or outlets).

I want to move to Theory...everything works there.

They fill a marketing VOID and provide bullet points for shiny marketing material.

I just rode 350 miles in 75+ degree weather...and I tried the vents both opened and closed. I felt significant more heat with the vents out.

Yeah, this may be one of those things where it's all relative.

It's kinda like a review I read about my helmet where the reviewer said the air flow was hardly detectable. I can safely say at 40 degrees you can tell just fine where the air is and isn't flowing. Same deal on the vents. But as others pointed out, it makes a good bullet in marketing fluff.

That is as it should be. With the mid cowling air dams (aka "vents") open, you lose any cooling effect as airflow is directed out and away from the rider's legs and thighs.

I think we need a double-blind scientific study done on this to reach a statistically accurate determination...

But were are we gonna find blind twins that ride FJRs?

Dammit! I'm not letting this go..! ;) But I am kind of interested in those FJR ridin' blind twins. Particularly if they look like this:

I don't think those girls are twins and they sure don't look to be blind, but my momma told me that I'd go blind if I looked at pichures of scantily clad wimmens like that one. :dribble:

So I'd say we can definitely use em. Just in the name of science and all...
