Not quite a Jeff Ashe tire report, but............

Several weeks ago I finally got around to changing out my well worn Avon Storms. They are an ok tire, but not my favorite. I don't like them as much as the previous Azaro wich lasted longer, and had more even (less cupping) treadwear on the front. Good stick when new, however. I would buy them again, but right now want to try some others first. I still have 2 complete sets of 0 mile Azaros on hand also.

One of the things I do like about the Avons (both Azaro and Storm) is their consistent wear characteristics, even past the wear bars. No nasty surprises, even well past the wear bars. Only a good surpise of how many miles you can still get after hitting the wearbars.

I offer the following:

My rear Avon Storm, replaced at 10,372 miles.

For any who know the tread pattern, these are WELL past the wear bars. Several thousand miles since hitting the wear bars.

Here's a photo of an 11,100 mile rear Azaro where the wear is not quite as severe, but well past the wear bars also. Like I said, I have complete confidence taking these tire past the wear bars. Nothing unexpected or funny happens.

As for the weird **** the rubber is doing in the Storm photos, I saw this also happen to an Azaro I took to 14,700 miles. Much as I try, I can never seem to get to the belts like I have on other tires. Well, maybe that isn't such a bad thing.

I cut open the tread of the well worn Storm and this is what I found:

Looks like instead of metal, Avon uses kevlar for their belts. I am guessing kevlar wouldn't stand up as well to pavement as metal.

I also changed out the front Avon Storm. It too was well worn and past the wear bars with 16,700 miles of abuse. It was cupped pretty well, and as you can see in the photos below, I started to get into some 'inner layer' of rubber or something.

Hitting the wear bars and cupping. Photos taken about 700 miles before replacement.

And now, at 16,700, the weird inner layer of rubber begins to be exposed. Tire is severly cupped.

So that's how you get every freaking penny's worth out of an Avon tire. Ninnys need not reply! :p

Bold to the last.

As we all have different internal pucker gauges...you my friend....definitely have the loosest tens-o-meter I've ever seen.

Great pictures, good details, and I'm sure it make others' rectal rubberbands go snap. ;)

I might try and squeeze 15,000 out of the stock Metzlers...

Those tires are really worn. I would have replaced them long before they were almost completely flat.

No Effing Kidding.

Way past MY pucker limit -

wow

you have run them way past my comfort level

I could save a lot more money if I stretch out my level

Hypothetical question:

If Skooter and JeffAshe were next door neighbors and each rode the same bike on alternating days, how long would the tires last?

I don't know. But I'm thinking that carving up a dead tire has to involve BBQ sauce somewhere along the way.

Hey Skoot. My grill or yours???

Hmmm... now me thinks I see why some here are always harping about ATGATT! I guess I'd be wrapped up bubble wrap plus ATGATT if'n I was to roll with that rubber. You braver than me dude! :clapping:

I have no idea how you got that many miles out of the storms... sheesh!

Here is my rear tire at 3500 miles, worn but with some rubber:

And then this is my rear tire at 4100 miles (give or take a couple) after a quick trip down to the Redwood NP in Crescent City and back:

And a closer view:

And here is the front, still some miles but cupping and being replaced with the rear for a set of PR2's from the group buy:

Skooter, how do you get those miles?

Not a chance I'd ever have the balls to go that far into those tires. That being said I currently have 10,500 miles on a set of PR's. New Roadsmarts are waiting in the garage for just the right moment.

Message below was posted to www.azbeemers.org/forum this afternoon. Whenever Skooter G shows up for a day ride with AZB, either Brian Boles or Martin Osete, offer to wrap his tires in duct tape and just paint the tread on with a black marker!

In November of 2003 AZ Beemers Chuck Doucet, Ed Quarles and Don Stanley met a fellow we had never ridden with before at our Mexico departure point of Gila Bend, AZ. This puto was named Greg Marbach.

SkooterG showed up on tires so bald, leaving on a 5,000 kilometer road trip to Cabo San Lucas, that we just could not believe it; even though we were seeing his worn out donuts on his FJR with our own eyes.

We even tried to talk this pinche ****** in stopping in a bike shop in Mexicali we knew of to get new tires!

Well, check out this post above; because "El Guapo" (or "El Pendejo") is back to his same old tire tricks!

Riding back North to Estados Unidos we stopped in a cantina in Guerrero *****, where GregM had been making a power play on the sixteen year old barmaid on our way South, and raised numerous tequilas y cervezas in toasting Skoot having survived the Baja Peninsula on worn out skins. Ai, ai, ai caramba ese!

If ever riding with SkooterG have him lay his hands on your tires for blessing. We AZB Riders are convinced that Senor Marbach has a patron saint that looks after him. And, looks after orphan/idiots, too!

I simply don't see how he gets that many miles out of Avon Storms. I love the tires, but at 3,000 maybe 3,500 they are toast. Maybe I should go on a diet or Skooter should twist the throttle once in awhile..

Skoot, you push this bike everywhere, don't you? I mean, it would explain the tire mileage and the 140K rear brakes.
