What the heck is a ground spider?

When you find out let me know.
Okay, now you two guys are being perversely obtuse.

Good on ya, Smitty, for giving this topic a kick-in-the-***.

Bustanut: Did you pick that specimen off of RadioHowie's *** just before shaving his anus? Smitty, what's your current ride?

Smitty, what's your current ride?
beemerdons, I think smitty rides an '06 FJR, IIRC....however, I could be dead wrong. Smitty has a habit of changing rides as often as some change.....what ever. <_<

I better check my spiders as well.

Thanks, Petey! I'd missed info Smitty now has an '06 FJR. As a BMW GS owner, sure was sad to hear about his GS troubles!!

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?s...t=0&start=0 petey, I just went to MapQuest and plotted your time and miles to SW-FOG 2010 in Taos, New Mexico: 9.75 hours and 557 miles. Sure hope you Oklahoma FJR guys will attend SW-FOG 2010!

I'm only the 3rd person to file? Okay, I haven't completely filed yet because I have to walk out into the rain here at work to check my VIN but I'll be filed within the hour.

I just filed my incident. I stressed in my report the potential of fire under the gas tank, which could happen.

I filed the complaint to support the forum efforts. But really, I don't think Yamaha will do anything about this. In order to rectify the problem they need to give everyone a complete new harness, plus redesign the ground spiders. I really don't think that will happen until you have a list of related deaths.

I originally thought that the problem existed in just the one splice but we now have reports of another, different, splice failing. That concerns me. So in the meantime, I am in the process of cutting all of my splices off, soldering them together, and adding an additional ground wire to chassis for each one.

I'm not holding my breath for Yamaha to do it for me. Unfortunately I fear this will go the way of the BMW final drive.

I hope I'm wrong.

Count mine.

Here is the text of my complaint on the NHSTA site. The complaint confirmation number, or ODI is 10299664

"This is on a 2006 Yamaha FJR1300AE model motorcycle with about 26k miles on it. I started the motorcycle, it ran for about 1 to 2 seconds then shutdown and would not restart. This was the first and only occurrence. Upon inspection by an authorized dealership service technician it was found to have an overheated, melted ground junction in the main electrical harness. The manufacturer is going to replace the entire main harness under the extended warranty I have. The old harness is being sent back to the OEM for inspection. It is my understanding from monitoring certain internet forums for this machine that other owners are having identical failures. Inasmuch as this defect can cause the motorcycle engine to suddenly stop running, there is the potential for a serious or fatal crash injury."

From my original thread on the subject:

So much for the survey - now it is time to act. Click the link below to file your complaint with the NHTSA.

Note that some of the newer filings were non-specific and could be mistaken for ignition failure reports.

BE CERTAIN YOU SPECIFY THAT THERE WAS A FAILURE OF AN ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR IN THE WIRING HARNESS DUE TO OVERHEATING

Someone WILL get hurt if this doesn't get resolved, if only because they drop their bike on themselves when the problem occurs, but it can be a lot worse. And if someone is killed, you can be certain that they'll never figure out that it was due to a grounding problem because bike accidents aren't investigated the way plane crashes are.

We have to protect ourselves.

So please get out there and file at www.safercar.gov

Yamaha just gave the ok to my shop in Beaverton Oregon to repair my failed splice exactly the way you say you are going to do it. As for difficulty in getting Yamaha to respond with a recall on this issue, my take is that their record of initiating several earlier recalls on the 2nd gens bodes well for getting a recall on this issue. Guess I'm just an optimist. Click

OMG! That is the burndedested one I have seen so far. That is just wrong. I hope the fix works for you. What about the others? I'd ask if they can do them all. I found 7 of them without looking very hard.

EDIT: There are 8 of them.

They don't live here no more.
