i want to take off my original 2006 windshield. how do you get the blue metal cover off the front of the shield?

The plastic 'W' is held on by two very small hex head screws -
You have to kneel in front of the bike, (genuflect if you want to ) look up under the bottom edge of the 'W', and you'll see them.
Once you've removed those, you can easily remove the "W" which will expose the 7 plastic screws that hold on the screen.

Luckily for me, there were previous threads on this. Once you know about the hex bolts, changing the windshield is a piece of cake. Took me all of 5 minutes.

Thanks so much - your tip helps me too - this forum is great.
I took the front cowling off today, going to get some custom paint.
I was kicking myself in the butt for not removing the windshield when it was in the raised position before I disconnected the battery.
I couldn't figure out how to get at them - I have the shop manual - but I thought they were screws.
Now I know all I have to do is prostrate myself in front of the B!$%#.
