My first Forum ride was the 2007 New Year's Day Ride organized by MadMikeII, a.k.a. Old Fat ******* :p . That's when I got to meet Mad and Ric and Rich and Rog and Uber and RsvlFeej and others for the first time--and learned what pricks they all are BTW :glare: ).

But I'm willing to ride with them again anyway, for Auld Lang Syne. And of course the word in hospital emergency rooms, ambulance cabs, and EMT circles is that Mad is back on the horse that threw him (so they are all poised to act quickly). Maybe he'll be mended enough by then to lead us, or at least lead us to a rendezvous point.

So I throw out the question as to whether we ought to organize, weather permitting, a second annual (at least for me) Northern California ride on New Year's Day 2008.

This link will help us all remember what a grand time we all had not so long ago....

I'll do anything I can do to help plan, select roads, etc.

WE NEED INPUT!!! Do you want to ride the same route? The same roads? Something new? Suggestions?
I am up for a ride or two. That weekend is four days off for me. Any direction, should we meet you at the parade?

Please wear your clothes, or at least bring your dogs....

I must have brain damage, if I didn't see myself in the pictures I'd swear I wasn't there! :dribble:

JB's video looks like we were on some good roads and after reading the old post see we stayed pretty local.

I'm in, which means my new years resolution is don't drink too much Dec 31st...

that was easy.

JB, as the date approaches, I'll have a better idea.

It's sounds like a great way to start 2008!

And at least I can be sure work won't interfere.

And the Rose Parade? Beautiful women? Beautiful weather?

A festive atmosphere? Who the hell needs that crap?

So, are we planning on this being a New Year's day ride? As in Tuesday, January 1, 2008? And are we planning a foothills ride again? I recall that we met in Sacramento just off Hwy 80 last year and then rode up 80 to Auburn before heading across the confluence of the American River below the Foresthill Bride, then up to Georgetown, down through Garden Valley and finally down Salmon Falls Road where we went our separate ways to get home. Kinda short ride, but nice, and we never know what the weather will be like that time of year. Well, not a short ride for JB, but then, he's coming all the way from the Gay Area and across the central foggy bottom land to the sunshine (we hope) of the foothills.

What is everyone's preference for length of ride, general riding area, meeting time, socialization/food stops, and depart for home time? Happy to suggest some routes, parts of routes, and stoppage places if anyone wants. I'm solo that day and praying that we get plenty of snow up in the mountains, but some dry sunny weather in the foothills to start the new year out right on two wheels.

I have been accused of being a Hobbit, so we should start at breakfast, then ride to lunch, and still make it home in time for dinner. You fill in the other planning parts , :p OK.

Howabout Katrinas or Sweet Peas in Auburn for breakfast, kickstands up around 10-10:30 for a loop out toward Grass Valley1 and then back to Auburn (or alternatively2, an old Hwy 40 romp up the hill a ways, followed by Iowa Hill Rd. to Foresthill Road) and then up to Georgetown on 193 for a late lunch (around 1:00pm?), then down Marshall to Garden Valley and Coloma, then 49 north to Salmon Falls Road to El Dorado Hills where we split up (Hwy 50 for some, Latrobe Road for others, and Green Valley Rd. to Folsom for me and others)???

1 Lower elevation first alternative: Placer Hills Road to Dog Bar Road and over the Bear River about a mile before taking Magnolia Road west across 49 (where it turns into Wolf Road) until it hits Lime Kiln Rd., left on Lime Kiln until it turns into McCourtney Rd. back to Grass Valley. Then -- either take Dog Bar back to Placer Hills Road or 174 to either Auburn or Colfax, the latter where Iowa Hill Road is in play (see part of alt. 2).

2 Depending on weather and how far down it has snowed recently, this alternative route, which could sub in some of Placer Hills Road, would be the old Hwy. 40 route through Dutch Flat and Alta, all the way to Baxter (or not as far if conditions won't permit), where we reverse course to come back to Colfax, where we can take Iowa Hill Road over to Foresthill Ridge Road, then down Foresthill Road to the confluence and Hwy 49)

Rich's route sounds like fun. You'd should make sure which restaurants will be open on New Years Day...but Katrina's has the best food in the area!

If we get more snow, Baxter will be no fun...that's the chain-up area today. You might have to alter the route to stay at lower altitudes. You might want to check the stream between Colfax/ALta and Foresthill Rd. If the level comes up the crossing is...er...uhm...interesting.

The end point is the same one we used last year. Starbucks on Latrobe Rd., that way it was an easy "on" whichever direction people needed to head home.

Yep -- getting to Alta, Crystal Springs or Baxter and getting past Iowa Hill to Foresthill Ridge Road are the highest points that may force a change in route, though it's possible that Georgetown could also have some snow (noting that it hasn't before today).

There be a modern and stable bridge well above the water of the North Fork of the American River on Iowa Hill Road. I'm more concerned about roadway conditions (possible frozen or wet stuff) further up the (northwest facing) south side toward Foresthill Ridge Road there. Yer not thinking of the wobbly old steel bridges suspended across the river at Yankee Jim's or Ponderosa Way (dual sport accessible dirt roads) are you?

Probably. I haven't been that way for years and years....the closest I got the last time was Colfax!?!? :dribble:

Yeah, I KNOW!!! :glare:

We could stop and check out the damaged reflector on the guardrail you tried to vandalize with your head.

. . . or the wide open dirt turnout where you could have done that get-off/Cycleport gear test in relative safety if you'd not jumped the gun by a hundred yards or so.

I would consider it but...Uh Oh? This means to attend this ride, I will need a place to stay, somewhere in Nor Cal on New Year's Eve?

Shoot...there's always sumptin'?

I believe Katrinas is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

A few years ago we met there on Tuesday for the ride to WFO 4 (See MM2's Peak to Peak ride) only to find that they were closed and had to parade over to Denny's for the start.

Looks like a great day!! :clapping: FYI last Saturday I went up Ice House ( with many patches of ice and snow) to Wentworth Springs and found that it was unplowed and was covered in 6-10 inches of snow. With this series of storms this week, I think that Wentworth , and similar places are out for the season. Iowa Hill usually has lots of wet new needles and leaves after a good storm, but it is so much fun to ride that is is worth the extra caution,.

I like this plan. :yahoo:

GF is in Oregon from 12/27 thru 1/2, and I have a couch now. You want to sleep with my cat again? Let's watch the forecast as this gets closer -- may be doable.

Sounds like fun, but, we'll have to poop out on this one :-(Deb will just be coming off infusion #3 and Doc has already said "no-no"
Prayers for Deb that she'll successfully complete this course of treatment and that we'll be seeing you both on 2 wheels for these rides again soon.

One of the favorite breakfast spots with locals (and me) is Sweet Peas at Bowman Road and Luther Road. I'm guessing it would be open, but I can check. It's accessible off the Foresthill exit, and is a bit bigger than Katrina's. Out the door and onto the first loop.

I would like to propose that we pick a breakfast spot closer to Sacramento, then do a loop that splits the difference between Excremento and the Bay Area, although it'll be quite east of the Bay Area. I would like to have a reasonable trip time to breakfast and then home.

Also, if it rains, fuggetaboutit.
