It has been posted HOW to do the mod several times and I have PMed a few folks who have the intention of doing it. or a few people who did it but have not ridden since doing it. Can someone post feedback on the gel in the seat mod? I have found a shop that will turnkey the seat with the saddleman 3/4 gel and a small layer of mem foam and shipping for $145.

Don't tell me to use the search function unless you want me to point out the short-commings of not working on a 3 letter word like "gel" or FJR. Hey MODS can we fix that with the new anti-hack software?

I went through that on another bike and wasn't happy with the gel. Heats up in the sun and moves around a little bit. You might try some of the new dry polymer gelp (it's a solid) and can be trimmed with scissors. Has most of the properties of gel without movement. Search for action products or gel-tec.

I am now enjoying my stock seat for $19.95. Bought a pair of Performance Century Gel Lite bicycle shorts. They have the saddleman type insert sewn in. I'm afraid of getting the ladies all excited, so I wear em under my riding pants.

Sounds goofy, but it works. And it's a cheap fix.

I had it done professionally. The seat is more comfortable but not what you would want for a long ride. It does heat up after time and you will get hot spots. I don't have any movement of the gel as some folks have stated, but I do think you money would be better spent on a real custom seat. I am going to have Rick (Rocky) Mayer do one for me. It is the only way to go if you are a long distance rider. Other than that, for around town, the gel is ok, just not the fix for me.

Good luck and hope this info helps ya.

He does this for a living so it is not a part time thing.

He did it quickly (I took mine to him) and the seat looks perfect. This is not a custom made seat though so like I said, it will not be good for the very long rides. However, I enjoy it for around town compared to the stock seat. I am still having Rick Mayer do a custom for me asap.

Where'd you find those shorts for $19.95? Cheapest I can find is about $30.

I have a build date for a Rick Mayer saddle, but I have a long ride scheduled before it comes in. Padded shorts have worked okay for me on other bikes before and maybe this can get me through that ride. TIA.

I haven't decided what to do with the FJR seat yet, but something needs to be changed as hot spots start happeining to me at about 200 miles. Before they happened at 50 miles but added a sheep skin cover per the advice of our honorable Mad Mike and that has really helped. Might mention the sheepskin helps keep you cool in the summer as well as warm in the winter. I have been running a Saddlemen seat with the gel insert in my HD Softtail for about 5 years and it works really great. As stated the insert will heat up if left in direct sunlight but I usually just cover it up with something if parked for any time. I think the trick with any bike seat to be comfortable is the seat has to be flat to concave in order to give the proper support. The roundness seen in most stock seats are the problem I have experienced. The new FJR almost fits the bill for me but just isn't quite wide enough and I'm not really wide in the back extremities if you know what I mean. It must be designed for those fellows from Japan. :) :D I think if you do the gel insert route, try and get the seat to mold around the posterior by making the trim job on the stock foam to allow the insert to fit as deep in the seat as possible without bottoming out on the pan. Support foam of firmer density than the stock material could be used to support the insert on the bottom and sides with a thiner layer of foam covering the insert before putting the cover back on. I have never bought a bike I didn't have to replace the seat or modify it to some degree. Hope this helped. PM. <>< B)
