Sounds like classic vacuum leak. Look to make sure the port plugs are still there and sealing properly. They can crack and still look fine but leak.

Admore Lighting makes an adapter that plugs into the harness in left side cover a little rearward of the airbox that offers pigtails of all the rear lights (turn, brake and tail/license). It is inexpensive and negates the need to splice any harness wires.

I use an Osah 60L dry bag for those long excursions. Easily attaches to the bike. Shrinks to fit what I need. Keeps things dry.
