I have done a search and read several posts on top boxes and mounting. From what I can tell it appears the subframe and stock rack are insufficient ... Is this the general consensus? Givi seems to be the top choice and I am considering the 46 and the 55. What would be the pros and cons of these...

I would suspect that city vs highway riding would make a huge difference in clutch wear.

Most likely you have wore the friction plate down in that gear range.
