Clutch Pressure Plate -- FJR vs Cars

The pressure plate on my manual transmission car bolts directly to the engine crankshaft via the flywheel. So whenever the engine is running the pressure plate is spinning at the same speed. If you're moving or sitting still with the clutch pedal depressed the pressure plate is turning with...

    '13 A&S Clutch retrofit?

I'd like to see front and back photos of the the thrust washer just behind the clutch boss. Supposedly it's grooved on one side which allows oil to enter the clutch assembly from the clutch housing bearing and main axle. Maybe someone can provide these photos as they upgrade to a slipper clutch.

    Cam timing experts needed

For your ruler (right angle tool) I'd recommend letting the excess extend out toward the front (exhaust side) of the engine. With this orientation you don't have to look over the top of the ruler to see the cam pip. This should be particularly helpful when viewing the exhaust cam pip since...

    Cam timing experts needed

That's likely just fine. There are 19 teeth on the crankshaft sprocket and 38 on the camshaft sprockets. 360 degrees / 19 teeth = 19 degrees between teeth on the crankshaft. The crankshaft error you're showing is nowhere near 19 degrees. The circumference of the camshaft lobe (assuming it...

The Really, Definitely Completely Un-Authorized TBS

I'm of the opinion it's counterproductive to adjust the throttle valves. If they were perfectly clean (no crud buildup on the edges) and the throttle bodies were nice and clean inside an adjustment might offer an improvement. But once crud begins to appear it has to affect the air flow for the...

    Hard down shifting...clutch circuit issue?

The clutch hydraulic line is not all hose. You see a hose at the slave cylinder and at the master cylinder but in between those two hose sections there is a length of bare tubing beneath the fuel tank adjacent to the frame. Obviously there are two hose to tubing junctions under the tank...

clutch soak, transmission in gear, or in neutral

The grooved thrust washer on the main axle just behind the clutch boss supplies oil to the inner plates. The outer plates receive oil thrown off from the crankshaft. When you disengage the clutch and the plates separate a bit, oil from the crankshaft is introduced down into the outer plates...

Damper in clutch cover -- Its function?

After looking at the drawings in the service manual and the pictures from your "clutch soak" I now realize that the damper and damper cover are oil related. https://atrophy.lock.net/pi/20100320/index.php Most of the clutch plates (the inner ones particularly) are supplied with oil from the...

Damper in clutch cover -- Its function?

The cover one removes to access the clutch includes parts labeled "damper" and "damper cover". What's the purpose of these parts? Obviously they can't physically touch the clutch but they are very close. It would appear that some design effort was involved for the damper. There's some...

    Hard down shifting...clutch circuit issue?

The bearing between the push rod and the pressure plate is out beyond the discs. It must be receiving a supply of oil from somewhere.

    Hard down shifting...clutch circuit issue?

If the fluid level has dropped then it's likely leaking at the slave. As the clutch friction discs wear the slave piston's equilibrium position changes slightly with a corresponding change of the fluid level in the reservoir. With the bike on the centerstand you might tilt it a bit to the...

Original CCT What Should I Do?

If you install a manual chain adjuster should you discuss it with a prospective new owner before you sell your FJR? I've considered installing one on my '04 but of course I'd be monitoring it and adjusting as necessary. It appears to be a simple, lower cost solution. I believe it would be...

    Digital Speedos

Don't understand why the designers build in so much speedo error? They obviously care much more about odo accuracy. I assume the same data input drives both meters. One wonders about the accuracy of the tach? Are they playing games with engine speed too? With the gear ratios and rear tire...

    Digital Speedos

These have two attributes that I really like -- There's not an analog dial with a higher than possible max speed. I detest speedos which max out at absurd speeds while offering a very small sweep of the needle for normal speeds. A digital speedo offers only mph or kph, not both...

    Gen 1 (2004) Handlebar Vibrations

Add weights to the underside of both handlebars. The underside or backside of each handlebar includes a large hollowed-out volume. One could fill this volume with lead weight, etc. and I'd expect this would greatly attenuate the handlebar vibration. Much of the vibration energy would likely...

    05 Poor Idle When Cold

I believe the wax motor gizmo opens the air bypass valves but it can't force them closed. Each valve has its own spring which pulls the valve closed as the wax motor mechanism moves to its warm position. You can view one of these valves in the forum thread below...

    05 Poor Idle When Cold

The intake vacuum of each throttle body rises gradually as the wax motor closes the air bypass valve in each throttle body. If one of the wax motor bypass valves misbehaves a bit and doesn't close in a gradual manner with the others the intake air for that cylinder would be out of sorts with...

2016 Is Official 6-spd, Slipper, LEDs, Analog Tach, Price

Looking at the cross-section of the slipper clutch I wonder if the oil supply to the mechanism is super critical? It appears that the metal ramping components must slide back and forth against each other as the clutch operates. The sliding interface would appear to need generous lubrication...

    Air Pressure Sensor Location

From the parts diagram it appears that the '13+ FJRs have a separate atmospheric pressure sensor. On the "Intake 2" diagram two identical pressure sensors are shown. One connects to the intake pressure hose network. The other sensor appears to be bare with no hose connections. A reprise of...
