    Cars, hurricanes, insurance, and replacements.

Finally got new tires here this week, and installed today. Drove the car to my sister's, about 15 miles west of me. First time I've had it up to highway speed, because the tires that came on it simply weren't safe to drive on. The muddy look is simply the "yard" reflected in the chrome...

    Hurricane Michael, a personal view...

By the way, I have a Flickr album of before/after shots, where I've taken some of my shots around the area and set them next to Google Street View of the same place. Some of the afters were taken the afternoon of the hurricane after things calmed down, and I've been continuing in the intervening...

Update time, after 3-1/2 months! I have a roof! That's all! nothing else has happened, yet. The roof was completed just before Christmas, passed inspection the first try. House still isn't perfectly dry, as the back doors both leak, and I think some windows, do, too. I can't be bothered to...

    Dash lights

It's a lot of work to get to. To get the panel out so you can disassemble it to get to the bulbs, the nose has to come off. My fairing and cowl thread will help you with that. Since posting it I've been told that the lower fairing don't actually have to come off to get the nose off, they just...

    5 speed vs 6 speed

The 6-speed is mechanically much more complex, being built on helical gears. The dogs that engage the shifts don't ride on the gears themselves but on a ring that is moved by the shift fork. With helical gears, you can't simply slide the gearwheels back and forth like the 5-speed does...

What's the Weather like where YOU are today?

OK, North Florida got down to 30. Probably didn't need to, just for 2 degrees, but I unhooked the water supply to the camping trailer I'm living in and let the hose drain. There. Ready for the deep freeze!

These are the OEM size, including offset, just a different model year. The wheel spec didn't change for 2003, just the style. The wheels on the car are not. I intend for the tires to go inside the wheels arches if the suspension travels that far!

    Cars, hurricanes, insurance, and replacements.

Speaking of fluids... the fluid for the Active Body Control, and for the power steering (same stuff,) is 20 bucks a quart! I've seen gallon cans for 75 dollars. To flush the suspension hydraulics, you basically remove the return pipe from the reservoir and let it drain into a bucket while you...

    Cars, hurricanes, insurance, and replacements.

So in December I had Progressive out to look at my two cars, both damaged by Hurricane Michael. The Miata was "safely" ensconced in the garage, and I took the Aurora to my office where I rode out the storm. The garage door blew out, and the garage ceiling fell in, so the Miata, which I thought...

    Hurricane Michael, a personal view...

The siding on the back and the gables is T1-11. I don't really know if it's the plywood or waferboard variety. House was built in 1982. Several panels are loose, even on the south end of the house (sheltered from the worst of the wind.) "Seal and paint" isn't gonna cut it! Not planning on...

I was wondering why they didn't! At the beginning, I was seriously wondering why they were even trying.

Not much new to report other than progress on drying the house. It took two tries to get the mold clearance done, the living room failed the first time, so more drywall came down, and the fridge was shut off and bagged, and the second try (third test overall) passed. I have a roofer lined up...

This might be better as a PM to hppants, but I'll post it as a reply. I finally have an initial check on the way from the insurance company, and of course it's an extreme low-ball. Also, they don't have my contents list, yet, or the receipts for stuff already done, like mold assessment, tarps...

    F**k Car Repair Shops!

Don't grease the lug threads. All the torque setting are too light then. My story is getting a set of tires mounted, took the car home to do just that, loosen and correctly torque. I could not get a single lug nut off, with my own impact air wrench, a breaker bar, anything. Took it back down...

    Blue Angels!

The one photo pass is extra tight, and they actually tighten it up as the season progresses. I saw them twice in 2009, in March and in November. Here's the comparison of the March photo pass to the November pass. Same team, same pilots, nine more months of flying together. As for the other...

    Blue Angels!

Took a day off from Michael recovery and went to Pensacola for my annual trek to the final Blue Angels demonstration of the year. Humidity was very low after a cold front from the north the previous day. Temperature was good, got back into the 70s, but Arizona dry! Still, an absolutely gorgeous...

I don't think any of my interior wall are load-bearing, except the end walls of the living/dining/kitchen area, which has the cathedral ceiling. It's pretty easy to examine the structure when there aren't any ceilings... The laundry room wall just isn't attached at the top, and I actually see no...

Icky-fridge is Gorilla-taped shut and out by the curb!! I found storage in Destin, about a 50-mile trip. The U-Haul guy is gonna love the mileage!! Hopefully all the stuff that's salvageable can go in one trip. Have not looked yet for roofing or remodeling contractors. Water guy said that...

    Hurricane Michael, a personal view...

Water was from roof damage. Surge was in the street but nowhere near high enough for even the garage, much less the house, which is 18 inches higher than the garage. My porch is a step up from ground level, then two more steps to get into the house, and the center of the lot is well elevated...
