    2018 FJR key blank

I have bent a couple of the OEM keys. They stick out too far when used with the luggage and are easily bent if bumped while in a luggage lock. I'd love to get a sturdier key for that reason. But I don't see any mention of the FJR immobilizer on the website though, so I don't think anything on...

    Turn signal lights.

Yes, you can have a constand dim setting with LED turn signals to have a "marker" mode. Use PWM control. I did just that in my Givi brake light mod. Pulse Width Modulation means applying full voltage for brief pulses. In my case, I found about a 20% duty cycle was ideal. The lights are switched...

Anybody got a FJR Crystal Ball

There were some early 04's reported to suffer from the dreaded valve tick, but it was primarily 03 (and older in other parts of the world). The tick was almost universally the result of excessive valve guide wear in the #2 cylinder. Yamaha tried a few things, starting with new valve material...

    Rear tire leak

Tip: add glycerin or corn syrup to your soapy water solution. It helps maintain the film when chasing slow leaks. I use 50mL of corn syrup and 250mL of dishsoap in 1.5L water. Or buy children's bubble solution at the dollar store. It also has a high film strength.

    (Tire) Life is good

Buy the smallest cheap 12v pump with a guage you can find, cut the 15' cord off to about 6', and splice in an SAE plug (or whatever plug your battery tender inlet uses). You can make it even smaller by cutting it open and discarding the plastic shell. Don't use it for car tires, they get too hot...

    New (to me) '07

Please don't say "ticking" when referring to an FJR! It can trigger flashbacks in 7% of older members. :devilish:

    Automatic Luggage Interior Lighting

Odd. Your link is clearly to amazon.com, but it opened amazon.ca for me. I don't know what results you get, but I see a number of offers for essentially the same thing at much less per unit than I paid -- except most of them don't come with batteries and none of them (that I saw) come with the...

    Automatic Luggage Interior Lighting

I frequently find myself riding along dark unlit roads and highways. Sometimes I need to stop and get something out of the luggage -- rain gear, heated vest, gloves etc. -- which means either looking for an intersection with a street lamp or holding a flashlight between my teeth. Yesterday I...

    Scraping Highway Pegs

I found out long ago that dragging a motorcycle's hard bits is a good way to lever the tire(s) off the road. After careful consideration, I concluded that this qualified as a Bad Thing, and started replacing the other hard bits that were left behind. For the most part, I have avoided repeating...

    Scraping Highway Pegs

Au contraire. If you are not replacing the curb feelers at least every valve check, you are wasting a lot of available tire... :devilish:

Blimey - nobody told me that!

... "Actual North"? Northumberland? As in, just below Scotland on the map? Interesting definition. ;-) One tip: looks like the red key is still on your ring? Take it off and put it in a place so safe you can't remember where you put it when you need it. If you ever lose the other keys, you...

    Top trunk rack availability?

Careful. I have found many internet businesses that claim to have items in stock are actually drop-shippers that assume their supplier has stock. Some will even lie through their teeth if you phone them and ask them to confirm an item is in stock. Also, many of them operate under several...

    FJR Forum Decal design

I am involved with the Yamaha XJ Owner's Group. We had lawyer dogs come after us claiming intellectual property infringement because a) we used the word Yamaha in the group's name and b) there was an image on our website that included a flag incorporated a tuning fork emblem similar to Yamaha's...

    buying high mileage FJR

Ross' list reminded me of a couple I missed: Fork seals (once). Bushings were also replaced since I was in there, but weren't really worn down. Brake and clutch lines were replaced with braided stainless after a few years to restore the feel permanently. Several batteries, before I figured...

    buying high mileage FJR

Ok, just to clarify: If we are talking MILES, then the recommended valve check is around 25,000mi. If we are talking KILOMETERS then the recommended valve check is 40,000kms. I'm in Canada (as is Ross, above) so I'll talk kilometers. Yamaha's recommended intervals are very conservative. In...

    Front Axle induced speed wobble

I can only assume I forgot to torque them when I reinstalled the wheel. I remember the day quite clearly, and will do so until the end of days -- May 20, 2022. I was prepping the bike for my brother. He could barely walk, but was determined to get one last ride in while he could still sit...

    Ivan’s Flash Tuning

Update: -5 across the board seems to be the sweet spot. Lower and I run into idle issues, especially on cold start. After multiple tests, I can consistently achieve 4.8 to 4.9 L/100KM at 100 Kph with the screen (Rifle, +5) raised just enough to reduce the wind noise -- perhaps 1/8" up. Best...

    Spark plugs replacement

I'm assuming they are all done in one session -- eg: the tupperware has to be removed, tank, t-bar removed, etc. then reassembly of everything only once if it's all done at the same time. And I've found a few short-cuts over the years -- eg: the manual says the left fairing panel has to come off...

    Front Axle induced speed wobble

Recently I have had a head shaker wobble if the handlebars are released at low speeds -- no problems at highway speed, no problems with at least one hand on the bars, but an increasingly violent head shake if both hands are removed. I checked all the fork alignment and adjusted the steering head...
