Rider needs help (storage) near Lovelock, NV (non-IBR)

Tip: Munge that e-mail address. Or better yet, offer it up in a PM. Spiders crawl all over these forums looking for addys they can sell to spammers and con artists.

    Dunlop Mutant

Thanks. He does call it his "favourite tire" and mentions Sport Touring. But he never mentioned it in his 2022 tire review and I'm not sure what kind of bike he's using for sport touring -- I know he doesn't like luggage on a bike. His personal bike is a Beemer F800 GS, which weighs in around...

USA Gen I Ignition Switch Failure

You are correct -- for model specific parts. The first 3 digits are the original model code that part was designed for. If the part is redesigned for a different model, but will still fit the original model, then the parts catalog for the original will be updated with the superseding part number...

    Spark plugs replacement

In 5 hours I could do the valve shims, replace the cam chain tensioner, R&R the TB rack to replace the starter motor and do a TB sync. Sounds like a long time to clean some gunk out of a vacuum hose. "Cleaning the throttle bodies" may have happened but I also question the necessity. It's not...

USA Gen I Ignition Switch Failure

The bolts are M8 x 25. The new switch comes with new security bolts. They are to be tightened until the top hex snaps off the rest of the bolt. I still have them because I replaced them with Allen head cap screws. Rather than drilling them out, I used a Dremel tool to cut a slot in the round...

USA Gen I Ignition Switch Failure

When my Gen1 ignition switch died, it was burnt contacts. Both times. No amount of soldering will fix that. I retrofitted a Gen 2 switch, swapping out my cylinder so the key remained the same. The Gen 2 switch had heavier duty contacts.

    Dunlop Mutant

It's almost time for new rubber, the Road5's are just about done. I was planning to go with the Road6, but am reading good things about the Dunlop Mutant. I've had the R5 slip a few times when cornering on less-than-perfect back roads and it sounds like the Mutant might be better suited for some...

    GEN2 stumble during takeoff

Try bumping the CO values +5 across the board and see if that has an effect. When my 06 was my brother's 06 he had a similar stumble which was cured by the above. I have since had the Ivan's flash, which is another option if playing with the CO settings seems to help.

    Put a 2017 motor in a 2014

Maybe I missed something here, but is there reason to believe the 6 gear mill will physically fit the 5 speed chassis? There's no such thing as wasted space inside a Yamaha engine, so something had to get bumped out somewhere.

    Ivan’s Flash Tuning

No, Ivan's website states it disables the O2 sensor. But the CO adjustment has nothing to do with the O2 sensor. The FJR injection system (at least on the Gen 1 and 2, I never studied the Gen 3) is pretty primitive. It doesn't even have a mass air flow sensor -- the mass of air is estimated by...

    Ivan’s Flash Tuning

I understand and expected that -- overall. Disabling the decel cut off, eliminating the O2 sensor input, padding the duration on acceleration, etc. can all only increase consumption under conditions of varying throttle. I just didn't expect the massive hit during steady-state cruise conditions...

    Ivan’s Flash Tuning

Ouch!!! One can't really precisely equate the mileage on one FJR to another -- there are too many variables. Wind, weather, tire type and pressure, even variances in brake drag. Yamaha quite possibly tweaks the fuel map from region to region to comply with local emissions laws. But it is...

    Ivan’s Flash Tuning

I think you measure octane a little different there. In North America, we use (RON+MON)/2. I think you guys use RON? So your 91 is probably pretty close to our 87 or 89. How fast were you going?

    Ivan’s Flash Tuning

In practice, less than that on a motorcycle -- unless the last guy left the hose full of 0% for you. In the past, when alcohol-free Premium was still available, I conducted any tests by running the tank down to fumes and filling a small jerry can before moving the nozzle to the bike. But in the...

    Ivan’s Flash Tuning

Today was Regular. I do have to wonder if the reputation for improved fuel mileage is related to the recommendation by Ivan to run Premium. Up here anyway, until recently Regular was 10% ethanol but most stations served up 5% in the midrange nozzle and straight gasoline from the Premium...

    Ivan’s Flash Tuning

First off, I really like the smoothness of throttle transition provided by this tune. However, after many tanks of fuel, regular and premium, over a repeated range of cruising speeds from 100kph to 120 kph. I have found that contrary to reports of improved fuel economy, my bike with the Ivan...

old guy on a fast motorcycle

Well, in Fjrforum they say that the Grouch's small heart grew three sizes that day. And then – the true meaning of riding came through, and the Grouch found the joy of ten Grouches, plus two! (With my apologies to the good Doctor)

    Hello from Ontario

I said this (or something close) in 2003 : "The FJR is not the fastest bike -- but it's close. It's not the best handling bike -- but it's close. It's not the most comfortable bike -- but it's close. In fact, it's not the best at any one thing -- making it the best overall general purpose...

Bike won't crank with sidestand down

All engines should use a little bit of oil between changes. The control rings should leave a thin film on the cylinder walls each stroke and the valve seals should leave a thin film on the valve stems. Pandora would consume about 200ml or so between changes. Legacy seems similar.

Bike won't crank with sidestand down

That's exactly what's going on. Common on every Yamaha with an oil level sensor I've ever owned, especially as the oil level drops a bit between changes.
