Sorry to hear your story, Warchild. When my independent BMW mechanic retired in 2006, I sold my R1100RS and bought a low mileage 2003 FJR. One of the better decisions in my life. I hope you can find another bike to lust after.

I believe they are. Probably specifically for the top finishers or those coming close to the time bar. 

It's a strategy that has worked for many a rally winner. If the points you gathered in the last hours of the rally exceed the penalty you incur. 

The bike near Grand Junction is going to be deep into penalty.  And the rider near Ely's not in much better shape. T-minus 3 hours and 50 minutes. 

One of the bikes in Burns made the decision to take 78 to 95 to Winnemucca. Another is taking Hwy 20 to Ontario and then it will be a straight shot down I-84. A third has yet to decide. Burns to Ontario to Provo = 565 miles Burns to Winnemucca to Provo = 611  EDIT: I should add that 78 and 95...

And the bike outside of Lakeview is also pushing it. Streets and Trips says 9 hours.

Based on the location map, I don't think any riders are in danger of DNF-ing if they are rested. A couple of riders in Oregon need to start heading that way.  Edit: the rider is Grants Pass is not moving. I wonder if ***** limped his BMW there for some reason.
