Gen 1 windshields free. Stock + Touring

Bob, if you're not in a rush, I can pick these up in the Spring. Otherwise, we're only about 150 miles apart.

Looking for best route from Cape Mendocino to Reno, NV

I think it's splitting hairs to go by estimated time for Hwy 36 vs 299, but I know that with a fresh load of fuel, I can beat the time using 36 because I won't have any traffic, police or other issues clear to I-5. The most important factor is to check for construction along both routes. Any...

SOLD - Dean Tanji aux fuel tank

I coveted the Dean Tangi tank for a long time. I remember my friend "MadMike2" had one and when his stator failed, we mounted an RV battery to it at the Chevron station in Furnace Creek Death Valley, and he made it back home to Sacramento. I also remember the tank spewing fuel on a hot day due...

What did you do to your FJR today?

Congrats on retirement Harald. You can join me in heckling Joe for "riding to work today"...again.

    FU*K FIRE

There are hundreds of communities in the same predicament. Towns too numerous to count on the edge of wild lands, and they are all through California. Good post Doug.

Bike Instability above 70mph on interstate

You have "setup' your suspension, but are you still using the stock shock and fork springs? The Gen I is seriously under sprung for a 275 lb. rider. Tire pressure may help, but replacing that old shock with a new Gen III or aftermarket shock will transform the bike. The 2003 had the weakest...

    FU*K FIRE

That picture is classic example of the problem The density of trees, connected canopy and abundant fire ladders, in a residential area. Fire is inevitable, and while I have seen much worse examples of poor vegetation management, this image shows an area wit a lot of remaining work. When I...

    FU*K FIRE

The suspected cause of this fire may be a 115 kva transmission line or tower that reported a short 20 minutes before the the Camp Fire was reported. Aerial observations later that day revealed damage to a tower. These kinds of transmission lines are prohibitive, and possibly impossible to bury...

    Damn Just damn

Sorry to hear you lost a brother in law and good friend. Last week a good friend of mine a few years younger than me (no relation, but we're considered family) had a massive stroke caused by a ruptured brain aneurysm the size of a lemon. His life was saved, but what life? He is in a coma-like...

    Broken Penske Clevis.

We were told a new design was in final setup and would be available...that was two years ago. I think we can still get a free replacement by calling direct, but I don't know if they ever delivered on this promise. Pretty disappointing considering the safety issue here.

New GPS or still the same ol stuff ?

I think the next generation of GPS is similar to what we have already gotten in our cars and trucks. A GPS with Apple Carplay and Android player, using voice commands for everything from media selection, to messaging exists, and is totally hands free. Whether Garmin is bright enough and...

What's the Weather like where YOU are today?

The weather thread is back. That's all you need to know since the usual themes are the Arizonans have emerged from air conditioned hibernation, the Californians are gloating and everyone else is mostly moaning about the crap winter weather and planning Spring rides on straight boring roads. Salud!

    Smokers (BBQ - not grilling)

I managed to smoke some back ribs Sunday in the rain, while the Steelers motivated the Browns ownership to fire the coach and offensive coordinator. The ribs, and game were good from my point of view.

    Warmth from California and Florida

After this trip I think Dougie is going to be welcomed into the brotherhood of Los Rosbustos MC. Great trip report and makes me want to tag along, or eat with you.

    Hurricane Michael, a personal view...

Keep us posted on any real estate deals. Glad you came through in decent shape, but that storm was unbelievably strong. A few miles farther west and Panama City would have been toast. If there is a next time, get the **** out.

    Rear Shock Failure

I have enjoyed the 8983 for many years and it's been through a couple rebuilds. Still it seems you have very low miles and suspension failures should be covered. I don't think I did my Gen I shock and forks until 30K miles, and the Gen 4 is much more robust.

    Rear Shock Failure

There are limits on the shock travel, and the lack of a shock tends to limit performance. It's unlikely anything else was harmed, however if you haven't done maintenance or rebuilding of the front forks, it may be time depending on miles. Even if you just change the oil and consider a spring...

First impressions of Neotec II w/SRL headset

I took a look and bought the original Shoei Neotec on sale at half the price. I'm happy with the helmet, but honestly after seeing a group of guys pick up the Klim modular helmet from Alex during the South Dakota gathering, I think the even lower price of the Klim is amazing, especially with...

    Smokers (BBQ - not grilling)

Agree with Fred and will add China is imposing tariffs on pork and as a result the U.S. price has been below production costs. I don't see the storm as an issue. I've not been doing a lot of BBQ this summer as we haven't had a crowd over to eat it. A couple racks is about all I do.

Radar Detectors for Long Distance Travel

On the Passport 8500, turning TSR ON will filter most of the radar signals you get from vehicle driver assist radar. I don't have much trouble with falsing since I did this, and I think when Fred updated his RD it was to get this feature. If you haven't tried it, don't write off the 8500 quite...
