    Spontaneous Tire fix

Got a hole in the rear PR3 about two months ago. Pretty much knew I had a flat because of the way that the bike was wallowing around. But didn't want to stop in the middle of nowhere. So I was able to limp into town and stopped at a coffee shop. Unpacked the plug kit (sticky string + tube of...

FJRForum Official 2015 Iron Butt Rally Tracking/Analysis thread

This comment by Ignacio is important to note for the armchair rallyists watching this unfold. Typically (as in when I rode in 2011 and 2013). They would include an 8 hour rest bonus worth alot of points halfway through each leg. And it would tend to work out that the rest bonus would occur on...

FJRForum Official 2015 Iron Butt Rally Tracking/Analysis thread

Ignacio Wrote: I am writing this a couple days after Iggy wrote the above and just after having read the Day 8 report report with the Leg 2 standings. There is only 1 rider that has bagged all 50 parks + 25 states. I think that he is actually in the best shape of any rider for precisely what...

FJRForum Official 2015 Iron Butt Rally Tracking/Analysis thread

Okay, time for another favorite anecdote. (I must be on a roll today or sumthin!) So there I was, day 1 of Leg 3 of the 2013 IBR. Out of the gate I had hovered up all the bonii in the SF Bay area and I was heading north for Vancouver. I had been running a couple hours with another rider...

FJRForum Official 2015 Iron Butt Rally Tracking/Analysis thread

Rambling observations so far... A little background for the readers on my personal context. I've run the IBR in 2011 and 2013. Was suppose to this year but job and financial considerations forced me to drop out 6 months ago. A decision that was even tougher than the one to enter the IBR in...

FJRForum Official 2015 Iron Butt Rally Tracking/Analysis thread

When I ran in the IBR 2011 we had to visit all lower 48. It wasn't till the second day where it dawned on me to do this but I took a piece of paper and listed all 48 states on it. Then as I finished each state I crossed it off the list. I did _not_ want to miss a state. This ended up being a...

FJRForum Official 2015 Iron Butt Rally Tracking/Analysis thread

Okay, even I am a bit confused now. I understand giving out the thumb drive with all the bonii. (That's the same as 2011 and 2013). But in past years the riders were also given the info at the banquet about what specific bonii are on the 1st leg so they could plan their route for when they...

FJRForum Official 2015 Iron Butt Rally Tracking/Analysis thread

Colin is indeed out. And man does it suck. A career change in the last year combined with a dodgy first couple of jobs has meant that I was not able to make the run this year. After having run the rally twice and then spent a year+ looking forward to this years rally it was actually a tougher...

That same damn front end clunk question....

FWIW: I have been running the Yamaha OEM steering head bearings for 10 years now and 250,000+ Km without problem. Replaced them once around 150K out of an abundance of caution. But once I had the old ones out and properly cleaned and inspected realized that they were in fact just fine...

Does This Fuel Cell Make My *** Look Big?

All you need to do is paint the fuel cell the same yellow as all the other bits...... Waiting to see what the range (and fuel economy) works out to for an entire tank running at nominal. Keep us posted! - Colin

Oil Change Debacle with Drain Plug?

A very big +1 on the anti-seize paste and going under-torque spec. Been doing the same on my '05 FJR since new and have not had any lost fasteners or stripped threads. As for the original topic 1) Either an insert to repair the threads OR a new pan altogether. (Personally I would find a way...

Dallas to Vancouver via La La Land

A few quick thoughts off the top of my head: 1) Big Bend Park, West Texas. Might be a little out of the way, but if the weather is okay and you have time might be good. 2) Pikes Peak Colorado 3) Million Dollar Highway. Durango CO north through Silverton and then to Ouray 4) US50 across...

    Front End Vibration

I've had off an on problems with vibration like you have described. I cured the problem by getting the Marc Parnell Tire Balancer and balancing the wheels myself. The shops might have those fancy computer speed balance machines. But you still need someone to take the time to do it right. Its...

If You Could Reinvent The FJR What Would You Change?

Interesting thread. For the most part Let the FJR1300 be. All the features people talk about are good (bigger engine, 6th gear, more this more that). Its all good. But the reality is that its big and will get bigger over time. (Actually quite happy I own a Gen1 in that regard. The Gen3...

    Welcome 2015 IBR Riders!

I'm probably getting ahead of Ignacio but here's the deal. This is a private area Matt has opened up for us 2015 IBR entrants. The only people who will be able to read this area are 2015 entrants and the FJRForum Admins. The 2015 IBR Forum over on ironbutt.org is probably still the main chat...

    Driveshaft Spline Lube

Many years ago when I was first getting into motorcycles I learned this lesson the hard way. Had always taken the rear wheel off myself and taken it in to get the tire changed. I had always understood that shaft drive equals maintenance free. So would just slap the rear wheel back on with the...

    Driveshaft Spline Lube

I wouldn't worry about the rubber seal. You will find that if the rear wheel splines have been properly lubed that the rubber seal gets automatically lubed from the grease that gets flung off the splines. Just wait till the next time you pull the rear wheel and you will see. - Colin

Setting Up A 2013 FJR for LD Riding

Shuey: Just found this thread. From a fellow IBR'r congrats on the new ride and its looking great and ready to go. I would have to second the advice given above. When riding unloaded the stock rear subframe on the FJR is fine. Subject it to usual abuse that the LD community does will pretty...

Bulkhead fitting for aux tank through fuel pump?

When I did my tank I knew that some people had figured out how to go through the fuel pump plate. But I never felt comfortable with that idea. The fuel pump on the inside of the tank takes more space on the plate than you might think. In the end I was just never comfortable with the idea. If...

Toronto Motorcycle Super Show this weekend

I knew it would be, but still wore it anyways... There did seem to be an absence of Yami's at the show. For those not in the loop some years ago the manufacturers pulled out of this show and created there own Toronto area show. Which means this show is just whatever the dealers that show up...
