I wouldn't attempt going from neutral to first without clutch under any circumstances. Or any other gears if you are accelerating hard. I am comfortable with clutchless shifts under modest acceleration from 3rd to 5th although I don't make a habit of it. I rarely downshift without clutch...

2012 is still Gen II so 2013+ for both. I think heated grips were standard around 2010 or so.

I would still use a clamp-on DC ammeter to check current draw on starting before I just went ahead and replaced the battery. Sounds like a classic starter issue, despite the fact that it is fairly new. Intermittent issues are the worst! You could go another two years without it happening...

I wouldn't panic yet. I think their website still has to be fixed - "Touring" includes the Tracer 9 and the Ténéré 700. At least on the Canadian site, they listed two flavours of Tracer 9 (9 and 9 Y-AMT) along with the FJR. At least they put the T7 under "Adventure". The super Ténéré appears...

There was some difference between my '07 and '11, but it wasn't a big deal (to me), despite my mildly arthritic hands. I have heard that the slipper clutch on the later Gen III bikes was a significant further improvement.

I know you have had lots of FJRs and probably have experience with more different model years than anyone, but I put almost 200,000 miles on a 2007 and over 100,000 on a 2011 (so far). While I found that the clutch pull was a bit lighter when I went to the '11, it wasn't a game changer for me...
