TIRES?? What tires are everyone running on their FJR?

As an aside, this is the view from our Hilltop retreat

TIRES?? What tires are everyone running on their FJR?

You are spot on there. Our little town here has a total population of 1200 residents. Unfortunately, we are close to some prime skiing (Killington and Okemo within 1/2 hour) and the foliage season brings the tour busses up from the congested south (like right now). We already have plans to...

TIRES?? What tires are everyone running on their FJR?

I’ll have to check out those Mutants. Here in Vermont it’s hard to ride anywhere without hitting a few unpaved roads. There are only 3 paved roads in the town that we live in, the rest are either class 3 (maintained, unpaved) or class 4 (unmaintained). We are 2 miles to the nearest pavement...

TIRES?? What tires are everyone running on their FJR?

Worth noting: The people that get the best mileage out of dual compound tires like Pilot Roads ride a lot of miles on highway, in a straight line. That hard center compound is made exactly for that. I was never able to get more than 7-8k miles out of a rear PR, but I don’t favor the slab, and...

TIRES?? What tires are everyone running on their FJR?

I’ve got a couple of thousand miles on mine now and I agree on both points, though will add that the front also tracks funny over expanded metal bridge grates. I’m guessing these symptoms are caused by the center groove in the tread.

    Getting a new bike, beamer...

I find mine very comfortable. Comfort is entirely subjective, plus there are things you can do to change the ergos. The K12RS is a much sportier riding position than an FJR. That may or may not work for you. Only one way to tell.

    Getting a new bike, beamer...

Ask the seller if he has ever had the job done in the past. In all likelihood, with such low mileage, the clutch o-ring is probably dried out, if it hasn’t already been changed to a viton one. While it is a big labor job, the parts aren’t really that expensive, unless you go overboard and...

    Getting a new bike, beamer...

Yep. I have the FSM and Clymer manuals. Pretty sure it’s just the o-ring went dry from sitting around a lot. And use the viton o-ring so it doesn’t happen again so soon. But I’ll also change the main seal and trans seals since I’m in there. Probably the clutch slave too. Hopefully the...

    Getting a new bike, beamer...

It definitely requires extra steering input, but don’t find it offensive. I have half worn michelin tires on it (old PR2 rear and PR3 front) so some of that may change with new tires. It has a 170/50 rear, but there is an option to use a 180/55, same as the FJR. That may quicken the steering...

    Smokers (BBQ - not grilling)

Hey! Is it a holiday weekend? Then it must be time to cook some pork ribs for the fam. Cooking some St. Louis cuts following the Jeremey Yoder Texas pork rib recipe. Score the silverskin, SPG for rub. I’m using applewood because that’s what I’ve got. Pleasant day to sit out tending fire...

Shock is on the way to Canada. Glad it will help an old First Gen soldier on!

    AIS- Oily mess

My “son” is closing in on 40, and he’s the youngest. I know, I don’t look old enough to have 40-45 year old kids, but it’s true. And you haven’t seen me inna while either. Since 2014, actually, when you sold me on the red beauty that still runs like a top, albeit at a paltry 70k miles. ;)

    AIS- Oily mess

This was new for 3rd Gens and later, because they have the Idle Control Valves. Prior to that, even the reference throttle screw was open somewhat, to get a decent idle speed. I haven’t even thought of this in almost 10 years. It’s amazing the stuff that gets locked in your brain. Need...

    AIS- Oily mess

One of the screws will be full CW, lightly seated. That’s the one with lowest vacuum when they are all fully CW. Then they open the other three up to match that one. This way you have the least amount of bypass air going through the balance screws, and the most going though the throttle...

    AIS- Oily mess

My son’s ‘94 XR650L. Apparently he let the oil get too low. Lost compression, as you might imagine. It appears the bore is not fatally damaged (steel sleeve). Going to try stuffing another stock size piston kit in there. It’s a learning experience: Watch your oil level!

    Pay It Forward

Hey FJRforum. Was trying to move stuff around in my garage today and came across a stock First Gen FJR shock that came off my bike when I upgraded it to a Penske. I kept it so I’d have something to put on when the Penske came of for its regularly scheduled rebuilds. I never had any problems...

    AIS- Oily mess

The entire PAIR system was engineered in response to a problem that doesn’t exist. It’s only purpose, believe it or not, is to get the Cats in the exhaust up to temp faster, by injecting fresh air into the exhaust stream after the exhaust valve. Like many here, I’ve deleted the PAIR system...

Motobike tire price matrix - not extensive

I’ll be putting some miles on them this week. Captain Jack and I are heading down to visit Bill’s Old Bike Barn in PA. We’ll ride some back roads down from VT on Weds. so we can be there when they open on Thursday at 10AM. Will later be putting some slab time on them Thursday after the museum...

Motobike tire price matrix - not extensive

Yep, with 6 various bikes in the garage, changing my own tires is a requisite. The knobby tired bikes wear their tires even faster than the FJR. ;)
