Motobike tire price matrix - not extensive

Yikes! $300 is cheap now for moto tires? I just put a set of Shinko Ravens on my FJR fir the first time. No real experience other than they were easy to spoon on. And it’s Fred, not Matt.

    Getting a new bike, beamer...

Took my first real ride on the K12RS today. My God, what an amazing bike. So smooth. So powerful, even carrying about equal weight to the FJR it is blisteringly fast, and corners like it’s on rails. This could be very bad for my license.

Yeah, I always wanted one. Couldn’t pass on that deal.

Just priced those Trailmax Mission tires. Yikes! They’re over $400 for a set! They’d better last a lot longer at that price. The Tusk “2-track” (rear) and “waypoint” (front) adventure tires that I bought for the Africa Twin are less than $200 a set. And they look considerably more dirt...

    Getting a new bike, beamer...

The Husky has plenty of power for the highway, but I have some real knobbies on it, which keeps me from riding much more than 60-65mph. Right now it has MotoZ tractionators, but they seem to be wearing quickly. I’m going to try the Tusk Dsport knobbies next. Also have a set of Tusk ADV...

    Getting a new bike, beamer...

14,000 miles on a rear tire is pretty damn good. I wish I could get that on any of my rides. My friend, Captain Jack, seems to get far more miles out of his tires on his FJR than I’ve ever managed. I just did a tire change yesterday on my ‘14 FJR. Tried a front Metzler with my last NOS PR2...

    Getting a new bike, beamer...

Follow-up on my BMW F650GS Dakar: After getting it into reasonable riding shape last winter, I jumped the shark this spring and “invested” (with expected loss of investment) in a 2021 Husqvarna 701 Enduro with 12k miles on it. I, of course, went through the bike thoroughly. It had some needs...

Any recommendations for a non-slip mesh seat cover?

+1 on the black shelf liner stuff. My SO used that stuff exclusively on her seat to keep her from sliding forward into me when I hit the brakes. Several other NERDy couples around here adopted the same strategy. Stuff’s cheap. Only trick is getting it shaped and staying put. I used to...

    Smokers (BBQ - not grilling)

Doing smaller pork butts is probably the best way to go. The last ones I did took over 16 hours at 235F steady, but they were both pretty big. Next time if I have a lot to do I plan on chunking them up to 3-4 lb sized hunks. Cook faster and get more bark surface. Win-win!

    Unusual Tire Wear

Wait! You got 13k miles out of a set of those tires? What magic is this? I can sometimes get ~ 13k out of a front, but never from any rear. The tread on the sides are generally gonzo by 8-9k miles. Not from hooning it either. Just regular back roads.

    Sold 2015 FJR 1300A

Makes me sad because my bike is a year older and has 10k more miles. I’d have a really hard time parting with mine for $5500. Luckily I don’t have to sell it. One thing that I’ve learned about selling used bikes is that the advertisement, especially the photos, makes a huge difference...

Motobike tire price matrix - not extensive

Hey, Don. Do you have a link to the spreadsheet? I think your photo truncated the data. I will note that there just don’t seem to be any great deals in tires for the FJR anymore. I’m going out on a limb and trying a set of Shinko Ravens next, as soon as my current set is finished.

Difficulty starting with a warm engine

Before digging into the starter motor, it is also a well known thing that the FJR is always harder starting when hot, requiring more power from the battery. On my 1st Gen 2005 I once had a situation where any time I tried to start the bike when the engine was hot, the battery voltage would...

    Smokers (BBQ - not grilling)

Yes, I’ve always noticed that too. In this case I think it was a few problems. I couldn’t get my preferred pellets (lumberjack hickory) at Runnings. They were clean out. I got Bear Mountain Hickory, but remember them never having as much smoke flavor. Also, cooking on the pellet burner is...

The best year for the FJR1300

Greg knows his FJRs. He has certainly had enough different ones over the years to know. I am still really enjoying my 2014 ES. I’m now closing in on its 3rd valve check @75k (yeah, yeah, I’m a slacker) and expect to do its one (and only) adjustment that it will ever have at that time. The...

    Smokers (BBQ - not grilling)

The rest of the cook went exactly as planned. Here’s the results: Plenty tender, lots of smoke ring, and decent bark considering it was formed on a pellet smoker. But the flavor was kind of “meh”… The chef is always his own worst critic, but after a full day of cooking, it just wasn’t...

    Smokers (BBQ - not grilling)

Well, the weather pattern in the Northeast killed the neighborhood BBQ plan. We have been getting rain every weekend, and with the holiday next weekend, just pulled the plug on it. Now I have about 12 lbs of pulled pork and 9 racks of uncooked ribs in the chest freezer. To make room for all...
