    Snow is ********

9 degrees F here in Vermont this morning, but no snow on the ground in this El Ninio weather pattern. We have real winter tires (Bridgestone Blizzaks) on separate wheel sets for both of our 4WD vehicles. Without them we would not be able to get home sometimes. They go on at Halloween and...

    Smokers (BBQ - not grilling)

Took right about 3 hours to reach 110 degrees. Rested a bit longer than planned while we opened gifts. Seared the outside lightly. I think I hit the target pretty well. Everyone was happy with flavor and texture. Ate too much for sure today.

    Smokers (BBQ - not grilling)

From Thanksgiving to Christmas already! I have a choice grade, 8 1/2 lb, bone-in Beef Rib Roast (aka ”Prime Rib”) to cook for the clan today. Convinced Mama that she should let me cook outside it on one of the smokers. Dry brined (spicy mustard binder, kosher salt, course black pepper)...

    Getting a new bike, beamer...

52k miles. They are big diameter flat shims. Nice thing is the shims go over the buckets, so you don’t need to remove the cam to change shims. Just make or buy a tool to depress the valve. Same setup as a K100 that I owned many moons ago. Bad thing is they are definitely case hardened since...

    Getting a new bike, beamer...

I still have my Africa Twin, which is comparable to your BMW F twins. This will see mostly Vermont dirt roads, and has Shinko Big Block knobbies on it, but is more street capable than the XR650L it’s replacing. I’ve already had much of the stuff from underneath the faux tank out, which is...

    Getting a new bike, beamer...

I recently re-joined the BMW kool-aid drinkers. Bought a well used 2003 F650GS Dakar w/ 50k miles on the clock for a princely sum of $2k. Bought it to replace the ‘93 XR650L that was last year’s winter project bike. Then this past summer my son decided that he really liked that bike, so he...

Cycle World writer Kevin Cameron knows Squat

Yes. That is what any pre-load adjustment does; it changes the ride height. That is all that it does. It doesn’t make the spring any stiffer. The shock will still compress the same amount with a given added load, just starting from a higher point. Note: The lever on an “A” (non-ES) is not a...

    Push Pin Fasteners

Hmmm. Maybe I’ve been doing it wrong all these years? For those Phillips head pop-rivets I’ve used a screw driver to pop the head up, then pry out the body. But for installing, with the head pre-popped up I always just push the rivet body in place, then push the Phillips head center part...

    RIP ionbeam - 10/7/23

The best part that you didn’t mention was that it is going to another FJR enthusiast. Your younger brother! Keeping this bike in the FJR family is too cool.

Anyone in Upstate NY area? ...with an aftermarket seat?

Sorry Russ, but it’s not just my opinion. Pretty much anyone that wants long distance comfort would agree. And the OP asked specifically about increasing comfort. I’m afraid that you represent the minority opinion on that.

    Smokers (BBQ - not grilling)

Sounds really good. We’re going to be guests at my son’s just down the hill, but tomorrow we will be cooking a small turkey for Thanksgiving round 2. Only problem is my wife doesn’t let me smoke the Thanksgiving turkey. She likes to cook it in the kitchen oven and make the house smell...

22nd annual Ride to the Rock

I’m guessing that you’ve never ridden in Northern New England. There is plenty of road salt used in winter, but not many straight roads.

Anyone in Upstate NY area? ...with an aftermarket seat?

I’m in West Windsor, over on the NH border. Yeah, we got about 6” of the white stuff the night before last. Being a couple miles from pavement, that spells the end of this year’s riding season for me. I tried many different seats on my 1st Gen before I sucked it up and got my stock seat...

Anyone in Upstate NY area? ...with an aftermarket seat?

Have you ever actually ridden in a Russell Daylong? Or are you basing your judgement on other people’s reports? I have only ever been fully satisfied with a moto seat when it was a Russell. I have tried too many others to enumerate. Only the Russell works the way it does. If you want...

Oh, I do. Wish I could make it again. Y’all have a great ride.

22nd annual Ride to the Rock

You all enjoy that 44. We just got 6” of wet snow dumped last night. It should melt off quickly, but the dirt roads are a mess and the paved ones have been well salted. Enjoy your Turkeys boys!

    Windscreen shimming

On my 1st Gen, I searched high and low for the best solution. I’m 6’2” tall with 32” inseam, so relatively tall in the saddle. And I also got a Russell Daylong saddle for that bike, which was the best money I ever spent on it besides gas and hotel rooms. But the Russell and Heli bars risers...

Mirror attachment point for RAM ball?

There was a notorious character on this forum many years ago that was known as “Patriot”. He had the most crap mounted and hanging from his bike of anyone I’ve ever seen. You, sir, would make Patriot proud of your mounting ingenuity.
