How hard do you run your FJR, and how often?

I have 110,000 miles on my '05 (that I picked up after a 6-month PDP wait), often run 7500+ RPM for long stretches (including a BBG in May 2014 in central Nevada), and have never had any maintenance issues. The top end is a little lower than it used to be, but it can still get to 8000 RPM in...

Holy Crap my A$$ is killing me

I got my 2005 new through the old PDP program (remember that?), and the stock seat was not good. Anything more than 250 miles per day was uncomfortable. I traded up to a custom-built, ride-in Bill Mayer seat, and it gave me 650 miles of comfort per day -- a huge improvement. It wasn't until I...

What did you do to your FJR today?

Yesterday was the first day of Winter, so I rode a SaddleSore from Pasadena to Tucson, then Yuma, Quartzsite, and back home - 1029 miles in a little less than 17 hours. It was cold all day, but it only rained lightly the last 90 miles. It was fun!

    Radar detecto connect to helmet

I plug the audio output jacks of my V-1 radar detector and Zumo 550 GPS into a Sena SM10 Bluetooth transmitter, which sends to a Sena SMH10 headset mounted on my helmet. I have the helmet clamp with the 3.5mm headphone jack, and plug in custom-molded ear phones for sound isolation. It works...

    Heated Vest And Gloves

Add me to the list of satisfied Warm & Safe users, with a twist. I use their heated glove liners, which lets me use my normal gloves but still get the warmth of powered heating. For me, it was the best option. I'm also a big fan of using an LD Comfort long-sleeve mock zipper top (the one...

Google Streetview avatar on the ET Hwy

I was doing some pre-ride planning, and wanted to check out a section of the ET Hwy (NV-375, between Alamo and Tonopah) using Google Streetview. In this area, the Streetview avatar changes from the little orange man into an alien spaceship...

Do US riders still need a Canadian Insurace Card?

Every year when I renew my motorcycle insurance, I ask them to send me a Canadian Insurance Card, which I laminate to the back of my registration docs along with my California insurance card. This year (for the first time), GEICO says the Canadian Insurance Card is no longer needed, and that a...

FJRForum Official 2015 Iron Butt Rally Tracking/Analysis thread

Spotwalla gets all the data, but presents different views to different users. The main view showing all riders doesn't include the speed values, but other views -- almost definitely password-protected -- can and do show all the available values. The Rally Staff also have direct access to the...

FJRForum Official 2015 Iron Butt Rally Tracking/Analysis thread

At his last location, I show 890 miles to the barn, by way of US-95 from Tonopah to Las Vegas. In his situation, I might be sorely tempted to add the extra 45 miles and use the ET Highway from Tonopah to Alamo, and then US-93 into Vegas. US-95 is heavily patrolled by local instant-on LEOs...

    Lane Splitting--L.A. Style

Two HOV lanes in Los Angeles County (I-10 east of downtown, and I-110 south of downtown) have been changed to "ExpressLanes", which allow vehicles to pay a toll for use if they're under the normal HOV occupant limit. You're required to use a transponder with a switch that sets how many...

Motorcycle Wind Noise Comparison Test Should You Wear Earplugs

When I got my custom molded ear plugs, they came with a half-ounce bottle of Oto-ease, a lubricant that helps inserting the plugs easier and more comfortable, and aids in sealing. It really works. You can get it locally at hearing-aid shops, or on Amazon or online ear plug suppliers.

    LIN3 as auxiliary brake light

In California, the Vehicle Code (25251.5.c) limits the use of flashing brake lights to this kind of pattern -- no more than 4 flashes in the first 4 seconds after brakes are applied, then solid.

    In-helmet audio/bluetooth..

About 6 years ago, I got a pair of Challenger custom-molded earphones from earplugstore.com. (ncjasc) I forget exactly what I paid, but today's price is $198, and I know I paid less. I had the ear molds done by my audiologist as part of a regular exam, and he added $20 for the mold work. Once...

    Riding in Heavy Rain

My buddy Doug and I did an SS1K together in heavy, all-day rain -- me on a Gen I, him on a Gen II. The bikes did fine. I'd bet the Gen IIIs would handle it with no problems, as well.
