I look at all vehicles like that. Hammer them for more fun in exchange for less time (or more maintenance). How fast can you afford to go?

Yup. Better to load test first than spend a lot of time and money elsewhere.

The Corbin is the giveaway. I had a Sgt and found it far too hard. Same with Corbins. Corbins are love it hate it design that seems to leave no one in the middle of like/dislike. They expect you to adapt to it instead of the other way around. ;)

Were they 2nd hand? Did you get them resized for you if so?

I'm with Iggie on this. I spent several times the price of a Russell trying to avoid spending that much on a Russell. Once I did, I never looked elsewhere. A new saddle from them became one of my first mods to any new bike I got.

You'll be glad to know the FJR final drives don't seem to fail as often. ;)

Might I also suggest you take a gander as the Spreadsheet of Periodic Maintenance. I had some help polishing it to its final state, so it was a team effort.

    Smokers (BBQ - not grilling)

Don't get me wrong. I get smoker envy like everyone else. I simply don't have the space for even your smaller one. A larger one could have had me doing all 3 meats in one go; just taking them off at different times. A friend has a smoker that looks like a locomotive engine with the smoke stack...

    Smokers (BBQ - not grilling)

As promised, I unlimbered the Char-Griller akorn smoker. 1 bone-in turkey breast, 3 chicken breast fillets, and a half-shoulder (so yes, I half-assed it). Got up at 5am for a late lunch prep. Everyone bailed but that was good because I let the smoker temps runaway, took forever to cool down...

Too commerically-sized for us. Our little akorn smoker is fine for 2 with occasional guests up to 10. o_O

When Tommy Chong moves in next door

Often they announce themselves with proclamations of "I own a Jaaaaaaag", (or pick just about any model with that dripping tone).

Is a FJR a money thing?

BMW doesn't make them that way anymore. With CAN buss and more, it's harder for the shade tree mechanic. Hey, wwmiv, Have you been at those gatherings and stood amongst a group where someone talks about how a BMW dealer put them at the front of the break-fix line and scavenged parts off bikes...

The Tick was NOT "fairly common" on Gen1 IMO. Would you SWAG that it was less than 5% (and probably lower)? My perspective was that we just heard about it a lot from those affected and those asking for more detail.

Drive train "crashing" when engaged on a cold engine

But I do change the oil viscosity when I move to an area with substantially different highs and/or lows.

Made beef stroganoff yesterday (no pics). Nailed it. Perfect on everything*. I even had seconds. * As in no need to season it at the table.

Drive train "crashing" when engaged on a cold engine

That's the difference. I don't ride anywhere that it gets cold enough to allow 5w to be advisable. I'm more of spending most of the time needing 15w50.

Depends on your weather but 5w is probably too light for the FJR.
