    No more BaseCamp development

Initial route planning for me is Theresa on the AAA mapping site. She uses the scenic and less traveled roads options between major points, then adjusts as seems appropriate. Haven't checked if I can import to MapSource. Pretty quick to put in key points, including hotels, and let MapSource do...

    No more BaseCamp development

"Access to the Explore website requires one of the following devices:" Looks like it works for limited device. Only works for hand-held devices. Good for walking home, I guess.

    Daughter needs a car

Had a 2005 Volvo XC70 with a turbo. Followed manufacturer's service schedule (oil & filter every 7,500 miles or so). Drove it hard for over 137,000 miles and it was going as strong as ever. Bought a used (50k miles) 2015 XC70 a year ago and now wish I'k kept the old one. Old one had better...

    Daughter needs a car

Ditto for walking around your 92-year-old mother-in-law's car.

Let's see what jacket you're using.

We both have older Revitt mesh jackets and Olympia pants with liners for summer. Liners don't work so well in a huge downpour (mesh soaks up a lot of water!) so we have Tourmaster rain jackets to go over the top for the gully-washers. Liners do work well for light rain, though and are great for...

    Bike by Train Across Canada?

Bah! Air Canada does not fly bikes into or out of the USA. Italy, Switzerland, Greece... but not the US. Need to rethink this. The problem with riding all the way, other than the obvious. is that you waste a set of tires. And with two bikes, that's a concern. Maybe trailer to Michigan, do the...

    Bike by Train Across Canada?

Probably hard to find two FJR's for rent. Yes, we love our bikes and the way we have them set up.

    Bike by Train Across Canada?

Since we have ended up riding to BC every year for the last four (five?), it would maintain that tradition. Since Air Canada flies out of San Francisco, that might be the trick. I'll follow up on it.

    Bike by Train Across Canada?

Theresa has set her heart on riding in Nova Scotia but it's a long way from here to there. I recall that years ago you could put your bike on a train in say Calgary and ride with the bike until you got past Quebec. Is this still possible?

    Fairing Removal

Not to derail this excellent thread but the "threat" is that the owners are not identified in whatever data base Norton uses. Seems a "problem" with a lot of sites. I turned it off to download this file. JSNS

    Fairing Removal

Got a "Malicious File Download" from Norton when I tried to download the pdf. Not sure why. Anyone else have a problem? Norton says the "lock.net" site is the problem, not the specific file.

Garmin Map Updating - Does it suck or is it me?

I found (and a Garmin tech confirmed) that BaseCamp and the 660 do not play well together. His solution, and it has worked well for me, is to set up your routes in BaseCamp, export them to MapSource and confirm they are correct, then load to the 660 from MapSource. I have to admit that, after a...

    Vemar Sharki Helmet Review

+1 That's my standard fix for a pressure point in a helmet. Have also used a large spherical lead fishing weight as I found it easier to hit the exact spot. I've destroyed four helmets in accidents so far and the mods did not cause a problem.

Garmin Map Updating - Does it suck or is it me?

It also doesn't like to update over a USB port extender.

    garmin lighter plug

Found the same problem on Theresa's bike when I jury-rigged my Garmin to her bike for a trip to the shop. Had to wiggle the plug and push hard for it to seat. Problem is the socket as that plug worked easily in the car.

The one BMW thing I miss

Hmm. I don't miss a thing about our '07 K1200GT's, at least nothing enjoyable. I've found the few FJR get-togethers I've been to a lot more enjoyable than any of the BMWMOA's I attended.

    Soft/Mushy Rear Brake Pedal

When I first got the FJR, I complained about the rear brake being very ineffective and needing a long throw. Dealer's response was a) they're all like that, and B) you shouldn't be using the rear brake. So I put up with the long throw, until last week. I took Theresa's bike to the shop for...

CFR 2018 - WooHoo! Registration is going LIVE November 1st!

Thanks for the reminder about the bridges. Had a couple of tense half-seconds when we were up there last year. Even if it doesn't rain, the slightest bit of moisture from a morning fog makes them scary.
