    Learning Base Camp

Garmin states that BaseCamp is not compatible with the 660 (and probably some other of their units) and you need to use MapSource to load routes. Unfortunately, BaseCamp has a lot of nice features compared to MapSource. The trick is to use BaseCamp for your route planning, save the routes in...

    Auxillary front lighting

We have Motolights mounted on the front brake calipers. The triangle pattern from the head light and low-mounted Motolights makes the bike much easier to see. Note that most police motorcycles use this setup for that reason. The narrow beam and low mount mean you do not dazzle oncoming cars at...

Split: Weight limit for ES Model?

Another solution to consider is the one we adopted: get your wife her own bike.

California Lane Splitting Guidelines Now Being Developed--UPDATED 5/18

Don't you love those "Botts Dots" on the lane markers? (The round white bumps.) Try commuting in the rain and the dark sometimes. You will learn pretty quickly to stay in one lane or the other and to change lanes between the dots. They are slippery!

    Exhaust Pipe Guard

Memo to self "Always search on NEPRT first before posting a question!"

    Exhaust Pipe Guard

By why wouldn't boots melt on the left side if they would melt on the right? Both pipes look like they have reached the same temperature. I rather like the looks of the guard on the right.

    Exhaust Pipe Guard

I notice that on both our bikes, there is a guard over the front part of the exhaust pipe on the right, but there is not one on the left. What's the logic here? I did a search and found that the 2016's are the same.

Trouble down shifting on the Gen3

Don't see much oil spraying around in the video. The BMW K1200GT's in '06 and '07 had a lot of clutch problems until they put a positive feed of oil to the clutch. (These were their first wet-clutch models.) I had two clutches replaced in the first 22 k miles until the upgrade. Never had the...

    Sierra Passes

Buck's Lake road is another in the same area. Start out past the medical clinic in Quincy. Lots of fun and less traveled than Laporte. Not sure which I like better.

    Sierra Passes

Theresa reminded me that, this time of year, especially with the heat, some vicious thunderstorms can develop in the Sierras. Last July we rode up to Markleeville and, on the way back, ran into a hailstorm. The road was white and you could hear the ice crunching under the tires. We slowed down...

    Sierra Passes

Right! That's the fun part. There are some fun sweepers east of Murphy's and past Big Trees although CalTrans is out by Big Trees straightening out a few of the better curves. Big Trees is worth a visit and the Aria Bakery on Main Street in Murphy's has the best coffee and pastries. We often...

    Sierra Passes

We rode up to Lake Alpine yesterday and 4 was blocked just past the east end of Lake Alpine. Not a lot of snow and the lake is almost clear of ice. July? Dag nab it! That's our favorite road. What was Sonora pass like? Still a lot of water running across the road?

    Is Cruise Control Consistent

On one occasion, I had my right hand resting on my knee. Yes, I know that's not a good idea! Recovery took a few tense moments since when the power cuts at speed and you have only one hand on the handlebars, the bike swerves! Initially, I tried turning the CC off with reverse throttle but, at...

    Is Cruise Control Consistent

Theresa was ahead of me some of the times this happened and I did not see her brake lights flash. Also, just turning the unit on and off should not affect the brake light switches. When on cruise, we keep out hands and feet well away from the brakes so I'm sure it is not that we are hitting the...

    YFO 2017 - Yosemite and Beyond - June 1-3, 2017

Bad news for me, possibly a room for someone on the forum. I've had to cancel our trip to the gathering because my back has packed up and I can barely walk, even using a cane. This has been a recurring problem so time for drastic action. It flared up again in Sedona so the trip back was tough...

    Is Cruise Control Consistent

Just back from a 2200 mile loop through Arizona, Utah and Nevada. We both used cruise a lot on the trip. When it works, it's almost dead on. It seems to go +1 mph on up slopes, -1 mph on down slopes. That seems counter-intuitive. That said, we've both had problems where the CC kicks out for no...
