Helmets - looking for a new one

You are correct. No current modular has a Snell rating. I believe the Snell rating was devised by Arai and Shoei to show their helmets in a better light. It is a controversial standard because to pass the test the shells have to be made very stiff, and there is an argument that less stiff...

Helmets - looking for a new one

For about 40 000 miles I wore a Vega Summit 2. That's about as cheap as you can get. Does the ventilation work? No, none of them ventilate well when you wear a helmet liner. Was it quiet enough? Yes, they are all quiet enough with decent ear protection, and none of them are quiet enough without...

The trailer version, or the truck style? Which did you have in mind?

FJRForum Official 2015 Iron Butt Rally Tracking/Analysis thread

It's an interesting exercise, but it's not really how LD Riders do it. That algorithm is another attempt to solve the traveling salesman problem with an eclectic bunch of landmarks thrown in. The problem is that it is, at its heart, a 48/10 type route that is over 13000 miles long. I know that...

FJRForum Official 2015 Iron Butt Rally Tracking/Analysis thread

He's a decent writer too. He is building his Ride Report in "bite-sized" chunks, and it is making for good reading.

    Butt Lite VIII

Nope. I would but the entry fee is a bit beyond my budget. It makes for a very expensive week. I'm not suggesting that it is too high, merely that I can't afford it. What I will be entering is Wayne Boyter's Cyclo Stampede. That is a seven day rally based upon .... National Parks Entry fee is...

Finally a route creating method that makes sense on my mac

.. or that I have had lots of practise.

Finally a route creating method that makes sense on my mac

I don't know what you guys are doing that makes BaseCamp so hard to use. I planned my 48/10 ... that is a 7300 mile route with 50+ waypoints with no trouble at all. Maybe it's a "learning-curve" thing.

Custom Silicone Ear Plugs - Make Your Own!

Silicone Putty is exactly what you get in the Radians kits. Some love it, I didn't. It was too hard when set and didn't seal well. Not all putties are the same, however, and some set to a much softer consistency than others. I have no idea which this one is, but it is a very good price.

    2014, 2015, or 2016?

... and I thought I was the one with the Gay Purply Bike. I'm doing it wrong!

    Butt Lite VIII

I have thoughts like this during every rally. Trying to be competitive in rallies is hard. It is meant to be hard. If it was easy there would be no point doing it :) When it hurts, I try to remember that.

Gen I final drive on Gen II

This really is solving a problem that doesn't exist. The FJR, all variations, are perfectly happy running high speeds in 5th gear, all day long. Actually, they are happy to do it in 4th too. The slightly higher rpms on the 1st Gen aren't much higher than subsequent models ... just get used to...

    2014, 2015, or 2016?

I'm thinking of having a sign made for the back of my "Gay Purply Blue" '05 "This bike is in front of you, and it's paid for" That should cover it :D ps ... OP ... You really can't go wrong with any of them.

    Advice on Possible FJR Purchase

Yes indeed. Something like a 650 VStrom would be about perfect though. We all compromise, and make our bikes work where they really shouldn't (my FJR on Hancock Pass is a good example), but some compromises are more significant than others, and hauling the FJR through commuter traffic every...

    Glovebox Lid/Battery Compartment Lid GenII

Boats.net probably should be on that list. Frequently they have better prices than many others, although not always. My dealings with them have always been good.

    Advice on Possible FJR Purchase

In exposure terms ... zero. Salt isn't the problem, wet salt is the problem and when it is wet it gets everywhere. If there is a difference I'd say that it is easier to wash it off a naked bike, than a fully faired bike.

    Sold: 1998 Honda VFR800Fi Interceptor

For 10 years in a row, UK motorcyclists voted this bike, and it's antecedents "Best All-Round Motorcycle in the World". They were not wrong. I loved mine and if I were looking for a bike this would not stay in Fred's shed for long ... about as long as it would take me to fly there, actually :D

    Advice on Possible FJR Purchase

I'm not saying the FJR is ideal for off-road, or that there are not bikes better suited for the purpose, but it is rather more capable than many assume ... This is something I know

    GEN 1 Electrical Stator

The electrical load you currently have should not be depleting the battery. Check that it is charging correctly by putting a multimeter across the terminals with the engine running at around 2000 rpm. It should read 14.2 to 14.4 Volts. If it is then the charging system is fine and the battery...
