    Final Drive Oil

Not a bad option. I use Supertech from Wal-Mart. It's cheap and rated GL-5.

    Burning oil

I'm not sure BSA Bantams and elderly Jawa singles worried much about that kind of technical nonsense :D

This ^^^ Barclay too ... He jumped 20 places and has a similar strategy. Dunno if he was too far behind though. Racking up the number of States early seems to be a decent strategy, but not to excess as you will get states in Leg 3 just by collecting bonuses as you ride back to Alb.

    Burning oil

I came from a world where you never actually had to perform an oil change on a motorcycle. They burned or dripped so much that the constant top-ups meant that most of the oil was always relatively fresh. The last trip on the '05 which has just over 100k on the odo was nice. I changed the oil...

This passage has the ring of absolute authenticity about it, and it doesn't just apply to the IBR: Day 9 is when some riders start practicing their “failure speech,” the story they will tell others about why they did not finish the Iron Butt Rally. It will be rehearsed over and over until they...

There is more to it than this. One of the aims when riding LD is to remove any and every stress point from the ride. One of those is "gas anxiety". My FJR will hit reserve at anything from 190 to 230 miles, depending on speed, wind, terrain etc. Maybe I then have 50 miles remaining, maybe...

Every bonus n the Rally book is listed under the State that it applies to. There will be no mistake.

He does ... but then he goes and posts "happy holiday pics" all over the place, and ruins the image :D

There is an interesting split between those who already have lots of States, and those who have lots of Parks. The Parks carry the points but requiring the States is the constraint on routing in the 3rd Leg. From my armchair, I'm thinking those with the States are handily placed right now...

    Want to ride to Kingsport?

Allen has nearly a quarter of a million miles on his K12. I doubt he will change now but I hope he enjoys his time on the loan bike.

They might, if Honda would update the ST1300 and give them competition. Meanwhile, most seem to be making their way steadily to the Checkpoint and a few need to hurry :)

That's a brave call. It's not where I would want to be today. I'm thinking that coming into the checkpoint from the south and west will be a lot easier.

I can't. We are on Band Camp duty that day, much as I would have liked to have been at the finish. I'll have to make other arrangements to bring the bike home.

Often when bonuses are close together, one of them is usually worth much more than the other. DC might look good, but this is July 4th weekend !!!

Just under 10 gallons :P I just had a text from Allen. He had a much better 4th July than 3rd July. Described the bike as "awesome" ... I think he's on drugs :D

Yes, you get the state by scoring a park within the state. Rest Stops carry good points too, but they don't score a state.
