    Want to ride to Kingsport?

Allen would probably appreciate that. I'm sure he is not as happy on my "hot" running FJR as he was on his K1200. He looked fried, and it cannot be easy to get back into your happy place after such an incident.

I didn't see his bike. It was recovered from I40 and presumably taken to a bike dealership. I met Allen at the hotel he had made his way to. Edit ... I was hoping he could use at least part of the layover as his official "Rest Stop", and not lose too much time from the schedule.

Yeah ... It's my Birthday too :D Seriously though (although it actually is my birthday), it's just what we do at times like this. Jodie sits at home watching my Spot hoping someone would do that for me if needed ...

You can add an FJR to that roster above :) Allen Hatcher had a final drive failure close to Elk City, Oklahoma, and about 200 miles from my home. It seems I was closest. I had to burn a little "husband credit" with the wife, to get her to follow me in the van, but we got the bike to Allen in...

Sam and Sydney Liles have had to withdraw as yet another BMW fails to make sufficient forward progress: https://selil.com/archives/6288 Heartbreaking end for a very nice couple.

There appear to be big points available in Big Bend NP. At least two of the currently top 10 riders are heading that way and there may be more.

No one will go to Alaska :D (my guess) There are about 340 Bonus locations in the pack. All except one is Daylight Only, the one is Yellowstone which counts only for Wyoming. Three of the bonuses are specific times only, and they are group photo bonuses. All the other bonuses are Parks or...

John you are not speculating. ALL parks are available on each leg, they just carry different point values and can only be counted once for the "50 Parks". The very low points some carry on, for example, the 1st Leg, is just an indication that the Rally Master doesn't think they should be...

We have a fascinating split-strategy going on with guys like Jim Owen, for example, racking up Parks with a medium amount of States, and Will Barclay (currently 55th) with an enormous number of States and few Parks. The points are attached to the Parks, not the states, and when the points go up...

Kitty this is quite correct. To be a finisher they need a minimum of 50 Parks, and they need those parks to be located in a minimum of 25 states. It is NOT required that they get 2 parks in a state to claim the state. Will Barclay may have messed up, but he also may have done something that...

They got a thumbdrive with ALL the locations at the start.. The point values for the 1st Leg were in an appendix at the back of the Rally Book.

You are not missing anything at all. You have it exactly right in terms of the rules of this Rally. The only thing I would say is this. While many riders will have few pretensions to a win, or a podium place, riding the base route of this rally to get the 50 Parks and 25 States is still a...

Typically most riders will have a couple of GPS units for their own navigation, and a smartphone hooked to their helmets for making and receiving calls. They will mostly have either mp3 music, satellite radio or a combination, and some will have CB radio. Most will have the ability to look at...

In this one, "Finisher" status would be unaffected (this is not normal), because to be a finisher a rider only needs to complete the 25 States and 50 Parks, on as many bikes as necessary. But Josh is one of the riders expected to finish high in the standings. That is where the points matter in...

Okay ... Here is what the riders have. They have a thumbdrive with ALL the locations for the entire rally. All locations except a few group photos are available on every leg, but they can carry different point values for each leg. When they set out they knew only the point values of each...

Many of the riders are always competing for a finish, then they consider medal place ... only after that do podium contenders play out. They make a plan, and they ride it but in this one the rules for a finish are very simple and clear. That said, ost will tell you that a "finish" is all that is...
