Valve check-ever been tempted to re-shim the entire valvetrain?

For me it's simply a matter of having a little wiggle room for the clearance to change over time and still be in spec Putting your clearances somewhere other than the spec'd min or max lets that happen (not that FJR clearances tend to move much). My last valve check yielded two that needed a...

Final Drive Swap: 6th gear solution?

Alright! Glad to hear it... I haven't pulled the trigger on the SpeedoHealer yet but I plan to. In the meantime, my daily commute is still yielding me the same ~40mpg as before, tho' one tank WAS in the upper 30's but that was due to some short trips and my heavy throttle hand. Otherwise...

Final Drive Swap: 6th gear solution?

Hey Neal..... if you're in San Jose, just keep your eyes open for a Blue Gen1 with Givi top case and what looks to be a really tall guy riding it (black pants, white helmet, hi-Viz jacket). My daily commute is up and down 87 past down town and the airport (Almaden to North SJ). For the rest of...

Final Drive Swap: 6th gear solution?

Hello again! Mr. BR checking back in on our discussion… and thanks for the compliments! I realize that this change is not for everyone and many folks find it completely unnecessary. We could look at it as simply another farkle, no different than upgrading your windshield or changing your seat...

Final Drive Swap: 6th gear solution?

For the small percentage of you out there, like me, that feel the FJR could use 6th gear or at least some taller gearing, this post may interest you. I’ve had my ’05 for only about 2 mos and while I love the bike, the gearing is still my biggest issue (if I can even call it that). Honestly...

If You Could Reinvent The FJR What Would You Change?

Best I can tell is that the FJR and Vmax share the same gearing.... 9/33 (3.66).. tho' I did read somewhere that the later yrs of the GEN1 Vmax did have the taller 10/33 gears (3.33) but I'm not sure about that. I've got Royal Star/Venture 10/33 gears in my FJR FD case for a 10% reduction...

If You Could Reinvent The FJR What Would You Change?

Funny thing on the weight... every morning when I roll my '05 out to drive way, I think "dang, this sure feels light!" (or perhaps "lighter"). That's because I'm coming off of 5 yrs of ST1100 ownership.....LOL! Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with my '05 and I wouldn't change much. I am among the...

    Cleaning under the gas cap

I did this on my '05 a few weeks ago when we actually got some rain. Bike sits outside at work during the day so I started thinking about the drain hole. No corrosion on mine but plenty of dirt and grit in there... all clean now, no worries. Mr. BR

Rear Brake has no effect on 08 GenII

I was just helping my neighbor with his '03 (?) Suz Bandit 600 and while finishing up a carb synch, he casually mentioned his rear brake doesn't work (bike has sat a while). Reservoir full, fluid is not dark, but a few pumps on the pedal + turns on the bleed screw and out comes a big bubble of...

    Driveshaft Spline Lube

I'm still an ST1100 owner and worn rear wheel drive splines and their maintenance is well documented over at www.st-owners.com. You really need to forego the spline lube for many, many miles before you have a problem but it does happen (and the moly 60 paste is the right stuff). The splines on...

Download source for 2005 FJR workshop manual

I wanted a paper copy for my '05 so I sprung for the official book from here: https://www.yamahapubs.com/ Regards, Mr. BR

    Trooper modification

I’d never even heard of the “trooper mod” until I bought my ’05 a few months ago and unfortunately, my bike came already modified. Not a fan to say the least so the first thing I did was get a nice clean set of Gen2 mufflers from another member here (perfect fit). I leave early for work each...
