I’ had exactly the same thing happen pre-rubber tether with the x-grip TWICE, because I’m an id10t.  The rubber tether is an incredible PITA. The Quick Grip is the only way to go. Used by Long Haul Paul https://www.longhaulpaul.com/ among others. It doesn’t require 2 hands either.

The hesitation you are experiencing MAY be due to old oil. Change it and see if that resolves the problem. In my experience of 75K miles with my 08AE, this problem goes away once the oil warms up, and is eliminated with fresh oil.
