When to change your fork oil

I used to think that a drain plug would be sufficient to drain fork oil but now I think that is only true for the old damper rod forks where the limited damping is at the top of the damper rod. Most modern cartridge systms use tiny passages at the bottom of the fork to achieve low speed...

When to change your fork oil

Interesting comments and a good explanation of how fork oil is contaminated, but I dont agree with his comments on fork oil temperatures, at least under normal street riding conditions. The front forks do not get hot for a couple of reasons (volume of oil and the externals being air cooled when...

    In memorium...Richard Christensen

Great guy, terrible news. I last saw Rich at Spearfish in 2015 and had many interesting conversations with him. As luck would have it, our paths crossed for a final time at a Dairy Queen somewhere in Central Montana when we were both riding to Butte in 100 plus temperatures. He was a really a...

    Yamaha sucks

Yamaha has a long history of taking a year or two off in their MotoGP bike development and their 2017 and 2018 bikes seem to be a step backwards from 2016. Rossi’s statement last weekend that Yamaha could fix the problem (probably related to electronics) if they really wanted to had to be...

    Rear Shock Question

There isn’t any reason to be worried if it is still under warranty....otherwise....it’s time to determine if the shock is actually leaking. I would take it to a dealer and request a replacement shock because a OEM shock isn’t designed to be rebuilt.

Black Hills Roundup II 27 June -1 July 2018

OUT....life has gotten in the way and I just can’t be gone from home during this time period. Had another nice conversation with Scott today so there might be one more Queen bed room at the Bells Motor Lodge but he said he was going to contact someone on the wait list so it might already be...

Does Canada require special proof of insurance cards?

My State Farm agent asks what vehicle is going to Canada and sends me the Canada proof of insurance.

Does Canada require special proof of insurance cards?

You will probably only need the Canada proof of insurance if you are involved in an accident, I have never been asked for it in 30 years of Canada travel. Canada does have much higher minimum liability limits than are required in most US states, I think that by having your insurance company...

    ES suspension - 'splain me

I think you are forgetting the damping adjustments. You can change between your preset damping settings for Soft, STD, and Hard on the fly. Opps....didnt see the above post before I posted....

    ES suspension - 'splain me

I can only comment on my 14ES because it is the only ES I have ridden. I found that both Soft-3 and Soft-2 did not have enough rebound damping and resulted in the dreaded pogo effect over a big bump or a series of small bumps. At 225lbs, I think the solo setting has too much rear sag so I ride...

FJR ES on Gravel Roads, Suspension Setting?

It wasn’t a FJR, it was a 1989 Venture Royale and I was pulling a trailer...which helped some of the time because the drag kept the rear end from sliding out. It did not help the last 120 miles when we had 6-8 inches of newly dumped shale and had to ride in 16-20 inch tracks the big trucks made...

FJR ES on Gravel Roads, Suspension Setting?

My ES has spent little time off-road but being one of a small group of riders who was foolish enough to ride a 900lb full dress touring bike up the 450 mile Dempster Highway to Inuvik, I think I have a pretty good understanding of what works when riding a street bike with street tires off-road...

    Motorcyclist - RIP - ASAP

I just received a notice from Motorcyclist to RENEW for 1 year for only $19.97 with instructions to Detach here and mail top portion in the postage paid envelope enclosed....which, of course, was NOT enclosed or I certainly would have used it to let them know how much I detest their junk mail...

CFR 2018 - WooHoo! Registration is going LIVE November 1st!

Aerostitch will probably be great north of the border...the problem may be getting to the border with the Aerostitch.

    Motorcyclist - RIP - ASAP

Yea, except you are referring to Cycle World who bought Cycle several years ago and is now evolving into another non-motorcycle publication. I used to have subscriptions to 6 motorcycle magazines, now 3, and soon to be one.

    Motorcyclist - RIP - ASAP

The new format actually came out in March/April 2017 (I think). It was a great step backward and has gotten worse with every subsequent issue but really hit a new low with the last issue. If it wasn’t for the name on the cover, it would be a challenge to guess what the target audience is.

    Motorcyclist - RIP - ASAP

I just received the May/June issue of what used to be Motorcyclist magazine. What a total, worthless, piece of crap, most of which is only remotely relevant to motorcycles. How can a motorcycle magazine that actually tests motorcycle evolve to (fill in the blanks) in such a short time? Does...

    Valve clearance measurements

if you were to experience a tight valve you probably would not know it until you did your next valve check. Everyone worries about a tight valve resulting in a burned valve but the valve clearance would have to be zero when hot to burn a valve and as long as the cold clearance is .002-.003"...

    Middle fork bushings

Has anyone removed the middle bushing? Ah yes.....How did you remove the lower bushing without removing the middle bushing? If you don’t re- install the middle bushing then you have a GEN1 set of forks which I thought were a lot less rigid than the GEN2 forks. If I had to choose between GEN1...
