    Fork oil?

There aren’t any viscosity standards for conventional fork oil expressed as 5wt, 10wt.....however Suspension Fluids whose viscosity is shown as 85/150, 125/150....are pretty consistent between brands. Take a look the following chart from Peter Verdone...

Valve check... Should I leave well enough alone or dig in

I think what the Yamaha tech told you is a true statement, its just not the criteria Yamaha uses to determine valve adjustment intervals. Valve clearances have a rather large safety margin to prevent engine damage, especially during break in, and should go much longer than 26K miles if set...

Valve check... Should I leave well enough alone or dig in

From everything I have read from multiple forums and technical articles, Yamaha is actually certifying to the EPA that the engine can go 26K miles between valve adjustments and still be in compliance with the EPA's emission requirements for that engine. How far the engine can go before the...

    coolant hose life

I replace them when they start leaking. So far...1 car...zero motorcycles, but I have never kept either longer than 18 years.

    COX Rad Guard

I think you need to take a closer look at the gaps in the plastic screen. I just measured mine at .38 inches, a little larger than buckshot. The mesh screen that I made does not go over the plastic screen, it fits between the plastic screen and the radiator so any protection that the plastic...

    COX Rad Guard

That radiator guard was made from a $10 round waste basket from Office Depot. I was initially concerned that the tight mesh might restrict airflow to the radiator but it didn’t seem to make any difference even in 100 degree temps at slow speeds.

Final Drive Swap: 6th gear solution?

You forget the most important improvement...it will make the Gen 3.6 FJR an absolute chick magnet.

    So Long, Charlie Manson

Actually it was 46 years (1971-2017) which didn't include 2 earlier imprisionments. A very expensive inmate for the California taxpayers.

    2016 battery cover removal

Wasn't needed, the late model 13s, and all the later GEN3s have the re-designed battery cover. I could have bought a replacement cover for about $80 but being a poor (cheap) retiree, I decided to modify the old cover first and see how well it worked....and it worked fine....just like the $10...

    2016 battery cover removal

Yes....I was that guy (among others) after Yamaha came out with a replacement battery cover (or modification instructions) for the early 2013 models. It just involved not using one of the fairing screws to secure the cover and cutting off a small section of the underneath the front left part of...

    PR2's on Sale Cheap

Those tires would be a good buy for a FJR...except....they are Pilot Powers....rather than Pilot Roads. Oops.....looks like I was a bit slow with my post....nothing to add that wasn't already covered.

    Gold Wing update....any news?

Don't forget that Yellow Wolf's bike was one of the first to have Traxxion's suspension upgrades which included a rebuilt shock with a much heavier spring and Traxxion's AK-20 cartridges in the front (also with much heavier springs). Yellow Wolf was pretty candid that he couldn't ride the...

    Gold Wing update....any news?

I found a HP and torque chart (somewhere) and the curves were almost identical except for the last 1000 rpms where the new engine was noticeably higher. Honda claims much better fuel economy to justify the smaller tank but only claims 42 mpg...my 2003 Goldwing usually got 40 mph. Anyone notice...

U.S. National Parks daily/weekly fees to rise ?

Lets see....a single 7 day park pass could cost as much as $70 but the annual pass for all parks will continue be $80??? I wonder which marketing/finance expert came up with that strategy to increase maintenance revenues.

    Petey

I last saw Petey at Ruben 5 (2016) and ate breakfast with him one morning. I was in awe of the miles he rode to participate in so many FJR events on both the East and West coasts and Canada. He said he had ridden 535,000 miles since he started riding at age 35 but approaching age 80 he didn't...

Can You Clean Compression Damping Mechanism in Fork?

When the forks compress, fork fluid flows through a channel at the bottom of the forks. The screw restricts (adjusts) the fork flow through that channel slowing the fork's compression on small bumps and road imperfections (low speed compression damping). When you hit a big bump and the fork...

Can You Clean Compression Damping Mechanism in Fork?

Same answer as Fred gave for the low speed compression needle at the bottom of the forks.
