BigJohn's Alaskan Adventure - The Trip Begins

The Buell has a belt drive which will not play well with the 450 miles of dirt and gravel on the Dempster Highway. I hope he is carrying at least one brand new replacement belt.

Yamaha--Stepping Up with New Features for LD Riders!

It kind of reminds me of my impressions of Triumph's Rocket3 after I test rode one...I had no interest at all in buying one but if I did something really bad and my punishment was that I had to ride a cruiser (any cruiser) to the East coast and back in just a week, the Rocket would be high on my...

What Generation are 2016 and 2017 FJRs?

I voted 3.5 although I have been calling my 2014ES a GEN 3.5 since I bought it, and after riding a 2016A didn't see much difference between it and my 2013A, so I think the real difference isn't the 6th gear, its whether its a "A" or a "ES" model.

    "New" 2009 AE Questions

If I was going to spend $10K on a FJR, I would be looking for a gently used '13 or '14. Much improved GEN3 and many bargains are available.

New Yamaha Touring Bike - Venture

Probably not since the wildly popular PDP is back...which is probably a big relief for the dealers since they won't be under pressure from Yamaha to have any on the floor.

    I'm a physical wreck!

Agree...I can ride just as far in 24 hours as a LD rider, the only difference is that I spread those 24 hours over 3-4 days.

    I'm a physical wreck!

I was going to suggest taking a short break after an hour but if you are beginning to hurt anywhere before an hour than that it too long to wait. Getting off the bike for a couple of minutes is most effective if you do it before you start hurting. Upgrading your seat and suspension will also...

    I'm a physical wreck!

How far do you ride between breaks (getting off the bike and walking for a couple of minutes)?

    Going to the Dark Side

I think you have already answered your question. OEM shocks are worn out when they don't have enough rebound damping even on full hard. Since they can't be rebuilt (except by a couple of shock rebuilders that are willing to do it), your options are to buy another OEM shock or pay twice as much...

Sorry for the damage to your new truck but glad there is one less forest rat in central Oregon.

HyperPro Fork Springs for ALL model FJRs

A stack of (heavy) spacers pretty much describes the bottom end of the hyperpro-fork-springs. I had the opportunity to hold a set of said springs at a tech day and was able to fully compress/bind the lower springs by pushing down on the springs when they were upright on a work bench. Those...

The Confusion that is Fork Oil

MajBack, I have been following your childish, repetitive, never ending questions about Suspension 101 for almost 5 years and you don't appear to be capable of learning anything but enough data to ask another question. You seem to be the type of person that will ask someone to write down a phone...

The Confusion that is Fork Oil

Right. When it comes to oil I don't think you can count on anything being easy....or consistent....or accurate....or truthful.

The Confusion that is Fork Oil

The 125/150 is the equivalent viscosity of Suspension Fluids which are measured by pouring a specified volume of the fluid through a funnel and counting how many seconds it takes. As such, the viscosity of such oils is much more consistent than fork oil that are simply labeled 5w, 7w, 10w...

The Confusion that is Fork Oil

GP Suspension used Motorex 5w fork oil to develop their damping cartridges and that oil has a viscosity of 22.6 Cst at 40C which is pretty close to a number or other premium fork oils, some called 5w and others called 7 or 7.5 wt. I have also mixed oils (Honda SS7 and Honda SS8) to achieve that...

Replaced Gen II shock with a Gen III shock

I have only ridden a 16A one time and it certainly appeared the spring rate in the Soft position was significantly lower than my 13A in the Soft position. The Hard spring rate seemed to be comparable. The Soft position uses 2 springs in series and the upper spring, by itself, has a spring rate...

3rd Gen ES Suspension Problems Poll

That's good news and probably explains why the oil in inverted forks stays so clean (and seems to last so long). Looking forward to Ray's write up.

3rd Gen ES Suspension Problems Poll

Interesting....but I'm not sure how bushings can be embedded in the fork tube unless you are referring to the outer/upper tube assembly. Did you take any pictures?
  19. M

3rd Gen ES Suspension Problems Poll

That would be my guess, especially the bushing that is at the end of the fork tube (referred to as upper bushing on inverted forks, lower bushing on conventional forks). In fact, the C14 inverted forks do not have a upper bushing and the lower bushing (just above the fork seal) is considered to...

    ES VS A

I think you could slide the ES forks up in the triple clamps a bit and it probably wouldn't have much effect on ground clearance. I never said that 350 lbs was the max load, I said that I thought that weights higher than 360 lbs were unacceptable (because of excessive sag resulting in too slow...
