    Final Gear Oil Question

My FJR is a 2006 AE. I’m surprised the newer bikes would require different viscosity oils depending on ambient temperature - that’s very strange. So I looked in the 2022 owners manual and yes, Yamaha steers you to 10W-40 or 10W-50 at cold ambient temperatures and 50 weight oil at ambient...

    Final Gear Oil Question

Yamaha manual says any SAE 20W-40 SE or better engine oil, it doesn’t require a special Yamaha oil. Rotella T6 5W-40 flows better at cold temperatures and thins out at high temperatures to the same 40 weight viscosity, and meets JASO specifications for a wet clutch. Rotella T6 also has more...

    Final Gear Oil Question

Yamaha already had a standard differential oil they marketed, but say not to use it in the FJR and Vmax. So obviously Yamaha believes a unique formulation is required for the FJR. I find it hard to believe that Yamaha is pulling some sort of marketing scam to sell us a special lube if it’s not...

    Noise from 3.5rpm

The 2015 FJR is the last year of the 5 speed transmission with straight cut gears. My 2006 AE doesn’t make any whining noise in any gear or rpm. Maybe try switching engine oil. I use Rotella T6 5W-40.

    Final Gear Oil Question

Since Yamaha decided that they needed to make a special differential oil - “Exclusive” for the FJR, this implies they found some issue with normal oil. I just use their Exclusive lube for peace of mind.

    Selling? Handling Test Ride Requests

Offer to let the buyer ride on the back with you driving. That demonstrates the working condition of the bike.

    2014 with serious problem

This. Also ask the mechanic if he held the throttle open while checking compression. If compression is really that low across all cylinders, I would check cam timing.

    Ivan’s Flash Tuning

My 2006 FJR1300 AE with Ivan’s flash gets about 10% better fuel mileage than Yamaha’s stock tune. I set the CO in the ECU to zero, as per Ivan’s instructions. I’ve been running it on regular unleaded 87 octane with Ivan’s flash for around 3,000 miles - runs great and no detonation.

Considering a 2016 FJR, but concerned about tranny recall.

I’d want proof that the transmission recall was actually done by the dealer. I have been burned by a dealer that didn’t do a safety recall, but did get paid for it by Yamaha. Not every dealer is trustworthy and honest with competent mechanics.

Steering Head Roller Bearing - Upgrade or Boondoogle?

Tapered roller steering bearings are not less sensitive to adjust than ball bearings. Been there, done that with other motorcycles. While it is true that the larger contact area of roller bearings should make them more durable, I know of no manufacturer that uses them in production motorcycles.

Steering Head Roller Bearing - Upgrade or Boondoogle?

I have 75,000 miles on my 2006 AE and the original steering head bearings are doing fine. If/when my bike needs new bearings, I’ll use OEM ball bearings because they are easier to adjust to the correct torque than roller bearings. Roller bearings in the steering neck are more likely to create...

Where do you buy your oil change kit from

Rotella T6 is motorcycle specific, since it has the JASO MA rating. That rating means it’s safe in a motorcycle’s wet clutch. The only question with Rotella T6 is 5W-40 or 15W-40. I find the 5W-40 warms up quicker to the right viscosity for smooth clutch operation In my AE.

LED H4 upgrade for 2013 Gen III — any Update?

I just changed a halogen H4 bulb on my Gen 2. Went with a Basic (cheap) Osram because their lifespan is more than double the premium bulbs. I only replaced one bulb because I rarely drive at night, and you need only one headlight to be visible and legal, and I’d hate to be out riding when both...

    110 Octane Racing Fuel

Ethanol free gas is better for long term storage, but you won’t have any problems using 10% gasohol if you add a few ounces of Stabil to the tank before storage. Sea foam is not a gas stabilizer, although many folks think it is. Sea foam is isopropyl alcohol.

    KrZy8 Gen2 - Charging Circuit

I just installed the Roadstercycle super harness on my 2006 FJR1300 AE. Before installation I was measuring 13.0 volts at idle - 1050 rpm. After installation 13.8 volts. It was a lot of work installing the harness because it’s a little too short. The location of the shortstop device also makes...

    2007 FJR Starter Issues

With mechanical problems, it’s usually just one problem at a time. Since you can’t move the throttle now, I’ll guess that’s causing your no-start issue. Remove the tank and find out why your throttle doesn’t work. Maybe the throttle plates are stuck wide open? Check the cables, cam and linkage.

Gen II ECU reflash by Ivan

I bought a spare ECU 3P6-23 on fleabay for my 2006 FJR1300 AE and sent it off to Ivan for his flash. Installed it today, did the Barbarian mod, and set CO to zero for all 4 cylinders. Bike fired right up with a cold idle of 1400 rpm. When the engine warmed up to three bars on the dash, idle...

    Ignition switch

The NHTSA recall ignition switch kit has a different part# from the switch on the parts fiche. I bought one on eBay for around $50.
