    Oil filter

Metal cup style filter wrench never fail, same size as Toyota Camry. Or the big channel lock pliers.

    Clutch Slipping!?

If you inspect and measure the friction plates and they look good, you should check the operation of the clutch slave cylinder. If the piston is hanging up in the cylinder, the clutch will slip. I had that problem with my 2006 AE. I replaced the friction plates and spring first to no avail. Now...

Any one else notice gas mileage has decreased significantly?

Typically, I ride a few days per week. Most of my rides are 150-250 miles. I always reset the odometer at fill up and calculate actual mpg for the tankful, typically 43 mpg. A lot of stops and restarts will lower mileage because a cold engine uses more fuel. I’ve never noticed a decrease in my...

Any one else notice gas mileage has decreased significantly?

Maybe it’s a gas problem specific to Phoenix? I haven’t seen any mileage change with my FJR in Chicago, NW Indiana or Michigan. Perhaps you need to take a long trip and get some gas from a different state to test the theory. Also make sure your brakes aren’t dragging.

    Wanted: Bike with character

I would pick a different engine design than an inline four, as the FJR already has that covered. Every different design gives the bike a different feel, riding experience and character. Think parallel twins, v-twins, triples, singles, V-fours, counterbalances or not.

    Wanted: Bike with character

Consider a first generation Tuono 2003-2005.

    Valve Adj. Survey

I just did the first valve clearance check on my 2006 AE at 67,000 miles, all in spec. Intakes were all 0.006” and one was 0.007”. Exhausts were all 0.009” except two were 0.008”.

    whining about valve adj.

I just finished the first valve check on my 2006 AE at 68,000 miles. I bought the bike with 38,000 miles, and I’ll guess that the valves were never check before since there was no sealant on the valve cover gasket. All valve clearances were in spec, so I won’t ever check the valves again. I also...

In serious need of maintenance manuals for my 07 FJR

Pony up for the Yamaha factory service manual.

Trying to select an FJR Model

The AE models with auto clutch and electric paddle shift are quite a bit more complex than the standard FJR. The service manual is almost as thick as a dictionary.

Trying to select an FJR Model

Gen 1 had some issues with ticking valves from rapid wear of exhaust valve guide. Yamaha resolved that issue with the introduction of the Gen 2 in 2006. Gen 2 had issues with ignition switch failures, some failing cam chain tensioners, and wiring harness ground junction failures. Yamaha...

ISO Brodie's harness or equivalent gen 2 fix

An alternative if you can’t get a Brodie harness is to buy a couple of sub harnesses from Yamaha. Plug one into the ground junction S4 under the fuel tank as explained in the safety recall bulletin. modify the other sub harness by cutting off the plugs and splice in a ground lug that connects to...

2007 FJR1300 AE 52,141 miles, question on recalls, service bulletins and running temperatures.

No Lamborghini for me. My handle is from a scale model aerobatic R/C plane. In order to verify the ignition switch and wire harness recall, lift the fuel tank and check the part numbers and compare with the recall bulletin that the dealer has on their computer. Dealers can scam Yamaha and get...

    It’s not you…it’s me.

I used to work at a British motorcycle shop where the owner looked down his nose at any BMW rider. He proclaimed that BMW riders were all a bunch of pipe-smokers who wore sports jackets with patches on the elbows…..😂

2007 FJR1300 AE 52,141 miles, question on recalls, service bulletins and running temperatures.

I would verify if the recalls were actually done on your bike. My experience with my 2006 AE doesn’t give me confidence with Yamaha’s process/record keeping for the recalls. I was told by Yamaha’s customer service rep that 2 recalls had been completed - ignition switch replaced and main wiring...

    Clutch Problem

I don’t think adding a piece of tinfoil at the slave pushrod will do anything to increase throw. It’s a hydraulic system and the throw is determined by the piston ratios and clutch lever mechanical design.

    The problem with old bikes…

Hopefully, you got a good deal on it since the previous owner didn’t wash it since 1984.

Nope, that’s an XR-1000. In production for 2 years.

Interested in a 2006 AE but scared of potential issues

When I first got my 2006 AE, I nicknamed it the clunk-o-matic. One day, I played around with different shifting techniques and finally figured out the best way for seamless upshift. Just close the throttle a tiny bit, pull the paddle shift, and open back the throttle quickly. As for...

    FJRF009.2: "Intermittent Ground Wire Connection"

I hear ya, but I’m thinking that clean and tight connections for the starter, positive and grounds, can only be a good thing since the starter draws the most current. #8 is the grounding lug for the main battery negative terminal. There is another smaller black and green wire that connects to...
