Agreed 100% The wild west ain't called wild for nothin'. Get out in the places where all is dark... not so much Google Maps fun. We've encountered some places that were dark. Maps has the option to download maps for use when there's no contact with the mother ship. They can cover a surprising...

Well, that's one way to get your music in full living stereo. My choice is to let the 660 show the map, and let Maps or Waze show me the way. Until now. I'm now the owner of a TT Rider 550. Woohoo! I just unboxed it and haven't even gotten time to power it up.

@rbentnail : I use two map sets, NA and Europe (well, part of it). That can't be done on internal memory alone. The SD gets all of the "toys" in addition to a map. As you said, it works nicely. I gave up on music in the 660 a long time ago. The HSP connection between the 660 and any BT intercom...

Tip: Ordinarily, trying run to the 660 with the back cover off fails. The firmware demands the cover be closed. A small magnet in the cover and a sensor in the body combine to show whether the door is open or not. It's easy to figure out where this is going. Find a small magnet, tape it into...

You're mixing the "HDD" function and the Garmin firmware that uses the "HDD". Having the same files only larger on an HDD doesn't add "debris" to the HDD. Files become fragmented: a file may be non-contiguous leading to more seek time leading to slower overall performance for a particular file...

I agree - the 660 isn't a PC loaded with cruft, it's a firmware device effectively managed by Garmin. Also, my 660 is old enough that I don't recall when I bought it. Given all the lumps and bumps it's been through, they should be more than enough to cause internal problems.

Moving on... I'm pleased to see TT is rational with the 550's power connection to the unit. Two wires and life is good. OTOH TT says they need x amount of amps (or milliamps) or the battery make up the difference. Which means that, at some point, the battery is too discharged to work. Back to...

The term is "topic drift". It's not uncommon, for good or bad, on forums. Please note the matter has come to an end here.

Too bad about the bike rental. FWIW some of the mountain roads are scary narrow, making a bike an attractive idea. To say nothing of the passes. Switzerland isn't all mountains. The "flat" parts are interesting, too. Two traffic words of wisdom, pay attention to the (IMHO silly) speeds. Be...

If you want to see "not perfect", check out the ride up Stelvio. There seven, count 'em, seven minutes behind the camper from hell. The comments, as I finally got around the fool and they are in German, have deliberately obscured. Overall, I got passed. A lot. So what. Even if I don't have time...

Time to ruin your day, then. Video #1 looks pretty boring until about 6:00. And then there's the phone call towards the end of the video. Video #2, St Gotthard Pass, is when the 660 went into full revolt. I'd very carefully built a route that should have taken me to the start of the original...

love the bike, the stock seat not so much

FWIW I did a cover for my BMW K1200RS saddle after the original saddle cover started to fail. In this case it was a "put it over the existing cover" cover. I bought an air driven stapler from Harbor Freight not a lot ($20+ ??) and stainless steel short staples at Lowes (the short ones are a...

    Blue Angels!

I was thrilled and choked up to see the missing man flown over USNA for John McCain's funeral. It was a rumble coming, thunder departing, and thunder fading as, rolling slowly, the missing man flew towards heaven.

Say what?!? A Garmin support person said the 660 is incompatible with Basecamp?!? OMG. The recomputing shows up on the 660, too. I also have the problem with spontaneous attempts to recalculate. In the video below, check out the start of Grimselpass and, around 1:15, trying to get the GPS to...

I think I'm down to having to live with maps and SD's in real time to understand the fine points of the answer(s). Basecamp displays the followed route and particulars about average speed moving, over average speed, distance covered, etc., etc. This is very helpful for a number of reason past...

I need to re-examine Tyre. I looked at it "way back when" and passed on it. But times change... Mea culpa about not saying howdy. We stayed one night at Acadiana Campground and pressed on from there, via I10 and I35, to Austin. Agreed the Vermillionville gumbo was only "not too bad", but it...

Repetitiously and redundantly... maps are free, traffic local appears by magic when using a phone and WiFi. Have I got that right? Onward... if I've read something in TT-land correctly, while an SD chip is a good thing, it's only good for maps or for routes and tracks. The explanation is that...

I agree with the idea of keeping paper maps handy, even while using any GPS device. In the sailing world, despite having all manner of electronic gizmos for position, speed, wind speed, etc., etc., the phrase is "we're just a battery failure away from the Age of Sail". Ditto for bikes, we're all...

All well and good until the phone goes dark and you forgot to download offline maps. Doesn't make them guides, does it. Map out of a book, no sense of orientation, no dead reckoning*... no wonder they were lost. * The name comes from deduced reckoning. We've been going A fast for B minutes and...
