2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

Surely Dealey Plaza figures in as a "crime scene" bonus spot I am guessing. I wonder what the one in Big Bend is.

    Michelin Pilot Road-2

I have a dumb question. It is one that I posed to the folks at Michelin earlier today, and they could not answer it. On my PR2s the front wear is easy to gauge since it has grooves all the way across and obvious wear bars. On the rear PR2 though the grooves don't meet in the middle, and they...

    SFO 09 Announcement

Rats! I have to wait until April before I wil know whether I can get away from that four letter word... WORK! Our bargained for employees may be going out on strike April 1 (no foolin) and us poor salaried folks are lined up to work 12 hour shifts seven days a week if they do.

    DFW area 1st Saturday/Sunday Schedule

I am in for the October 5 track day at Cresson. One thing RideSmart does to encourage sampling is they have 'parade laps' at lunch time. No special prep is required, street gear (jacket gloves, helmet) suffices. No need to tape or remove mirrors. It is also free of charge. They tell you at the...

    Early summer trip

Thanks! That is all for this trip. I was missing a certain pretty gal, so the last day was 740 miles of interstate. Not much there to photograph or write about.

    Early summer trip

This is the last installment of my trip report. Thanks for the comments so far. This trip was my first long one on a bike. 3,300 miles in 8 days. Made it to Arizona for the last day of touring. Headed for old route 666, the Devil's Highway. Of course it is not numbered 666 anymore, now it...

    Early summer trip

Wednesday morning, cold and clear.... clear for now anyway. I got an early start this day because the weather forecast was calling for snow and high winds by mid morning. I will ride in a lot of conditions. Driving rain sure... driving snow..... not if I can help it. I played with the...

    Early summer trip

Not far out of Chama I enter Colorado. The air is cooler as I climb towards the pass. The snowshed was empty at Cumbres Pass, and the caretaker's house looked empty too. The Aspen trees had fresh spring growth.. I came across this memorial on the side of the road without any names...

    Early summer trip

I awoke to find that my centerstand had sunken into the soft ground to its cross brace. Both tires were touching the ground. Good thing it was not on the side stand or it could have been trouble. I left it there and walked to breakfast, then on to the train yard to have a look around. The old...

    Early summer trip

As I neared Taos I decided to stop well outside of the city for lunch. this place was very inviting, after all.... ice cream is right there on the sign! I pretty much had the place to myself and was enjoying... when a group of fellow riders rolled in and asked if lunch here was good. The...

    Early summer trip

Monday morning.... good day for riding! The wide open spaces in New Mexico are impressive. My writing cannot do justice to the experience of being there... I am not a writer, so today will be more about the pictures. Before loading the bike and checking out I asked around about a good spot for...

    Early summer trip

Sunday morning dawned cool enough for West Texas.... Riders prepared to go separate ways. James was first to set out from our original group.. Chuck prepping his bike... My machine was ready before Chuck and Scott. so I headed out. As I headed out I fell in line behind a few other...

    Early summer trip

My first long trip on a bike started with the West Texas Pie Run, but it goes on for miles and miles after that. Seven of us on seven different brands of motorcycles set out from the Koffee Kup in Hico, headed for Fort Davis. I did not take a ton of shots on the long, hot trip west. Saw...

    FJRF003.0: Ignition Failures on FJRs

I agree, and my failure is listed on that site. The menu structure of the complaint form was not very intuitive. When I filed my complaint the model listing only had FJR13 under the 2007 model year. I see that for 2006 they split the A and AE into their own categories. Inconsistencies like that...

    FJRF003.0: Ignition Failures on FJRs

Basically, yes you are correct. The only exception is the minuscule amount of current that the coil in the relay draws. That should be very small, a tenth of an amp or so depending on the relay.

    FJRF003.0: Ignition Failures on FJRs

My failure was on an 07 with only 4,500 miles and no accessories wired through the ignition switch. Brown wire was no longer connected. I did not get to see it after Yamaha pulled it apart, so cannot say whether failure was mechanical or melting, or poor soldering at assembly.

The Million Mile Challenge. Who's In?

3,300 miles on the FJR this week on vacation. That includes a 740 mile day in 12 hours yesterday to get to ice cream.

    FJRF003.0: Ignition Failures on FJRs

Very good bet.... wiggle/push the wires at the bottom of the switch while the key is on. If anything comes to life you have a bad switch.

    FJRF003.0: Ignition Failures on FJRs

    1) What year FJR?; 2007 2) How many miles?; 4900 3) Failed while running? Or while turning ignition? Or whatever?; Running, stopped at a light in the left turn lane. 4) Type of failure: Wires pulled out? Switch failure? Unknown? (pictures are useful); Looks like loose wires in the switch...

    Oil warning light question

Thanks for the information. That makes sense of the behaviour. I guess there is no pressure monitoring in the oil system. Seems like a strange engineering (or cost cutting) decision by Yamaha.
