Personal preference, mainly motivated by laziness. I didn't want to clean the bugs off the camera lens. There is a bitbof distortion from the polarized windscreen, but I can still make out license plates. It's been good. Set it and forget it, hope you never need it.

I have also used a drybag on the pillion seat when I needed extra room. I bought this one and it has worked very well.

Quite regularly the US colours are different from the Canadian ones, in the same model year. My 08 is a California bike, in metallic black. Same year in Canada is Silver.

No Gold stripe, just a small badge near the top of the tank.

Will the side cases from my 2008 Gen 2 fit on the new machine until the new side cases arrive?

Yes, my understanding is that they are a couple hundred bucks.  I will just replace the bearings.  Now that it has been out once it will be a LOT easier to get out the second time.   I appreciate the link though.  I'm not saying they aren't worth it, it's a pretty slick setup for sure.  

This was from my '08 with ~90k miles on it.  I have to assume they have never been done. New bearings, seals and collars going back in.   Also, that M10x75mm bolt will be an M10x70mm bolt when it goes back in.  All ya had to do was put it in the other way!
