    Post-valve adjustment issues resolved

Rode it 300 miles Sunday and all seems back to normal. If the sync doesn't make that much of a difference it was either the iridium plugs (Autolite Xtreme Sport Iridium, XS4303) or something to do with the cylinder ID sensor. Maybe I had a bad iridium plug? Or maybe my particular ignition...

    Post-valve adjustment issues resolved

I adjusted valve clearance on my 2007 a few weeks back. I had't had much chance to ride since but enough to know something wasn't right. Symptoms were occasional low idle to the point of stalling and a hint of hitch in the giddyup. It did start using less gas - I got 43 mpg on the first tank...

Just ran across this on YouTube (2007 w/cylinder #2 failure)...

Clearly not the guy's first rodeo. Not a hint of whining... Put a new engine in, started it and immediately bonded with the bike. This is the kind of guy I want to make friends with.

Hopefully not something already covered (but if so, I missed it):

The most challenging part of valve shimming...

No timing issues! Advice about zip-tying the timing chain around the crank sprocket and to each of the cam sprockets worked perfectly. No teeth skipped! I just moved the zip-tied cams over to reveal the shim cups (it took a bit of fiddling to get them off and back on with chain attached but it...

The most challenging part of valve shimming...

I'm currently basking in the post-valve clearance adjustment glow of success in getting my fjr buttoned-up enough to reach operating temperature - without obvious leaks or other problems. Given the level of disassembly and some difficulty I was expecting trouble that hasn't materialized...

    Plug wire/connector separation...

Thanks, Dan! I did figure-out how to unscrew it and release the spring and (what I now know is a) resistor plug. The plug did have some oxidation that came right off. I have it all back together now and it's working, otherwise I'd do the test you recommend. I took off about 0.25" from the wire...

    Plug wire/connector separation...

Thanks guys! The advice here is pure gold. It's hard to see down into the top of the boot but it looks more like a post and less like a spiral/screw. May be best to replace just to be sure. It didn't come off from pulling - although some grease would have made things easier. It came apart when...

    Plug wire/connector separation...

Finally getting around to checking valve clearances ('07 with 55K and I think I might be the first one in here). And I and did this. The last type of vehicle I did my own work on (89 Mazda pickup) I knew how to fix this. On this beast I'm not so sure. I don't even know where the other end of...

    Aux Fusebox location

For those using the EB Powerlink system. Do you have recommendations about battery and jumper lead lengths? There is an option to have negative or positive battery leads 6" longer than the other. Is this something that should be considered?

2007 waits until water pump failure doesn't create a disaster

I'm kind-of thinking less is more in this case - as I pulled off a corroded hose barb, put the remnants of it back in and rode uneventfully home for 3 hours. I'm not going to "fix" anything on this beautiful machine until it clearly breaks.

2007 waits until water pump failure doesn't create a disaster

I got it all buttoned-up and up to fan temperature without any new parts other than the fabricated hose barb. I didn't ride it because it started raining and got dark. But all *seems* stable for now. Everything about it shows signs of rust and corrosion. I'll be very surprised if it continues...

2007 waits until water pump failure doesn't create a disaster

Yes, JB Weld. It was a pretty good press fit too: I had to tap it in with a hammer.

2007 waits until water pump failure doesn't create a disaster

My Versys is the 300 X... To it's credit it does go off road. But it could renew the market for riding crops getting to the trail.

2007 waits until water pump failure doesn't create a disaster

I'm going through withdrawal not having this rideable. The Versys is like riding a tractor.

2007 waits until water pump failure doesn't create a disaster

There clearly is much corrosion in my cooling system. Hopefully fresh anti-freeze will be enough to preserve it. Maybe a good idea to prophylactically add some Bar's Leaks? I fabricated a replacement hose barb out of aluminum rod and epoxied it in. Couldn't find gasket material after three...

2007 waits until water pump failure doesn't create a disaster

Recently purchased. Changed all fluids except for coolant - bc wanted to do with valves. Plan on valves this spring. Hopefully the radiator and rest of the cooling system isn't also on the way out.

2007 waits until water pump failure doesn't create a disaster

Other than it being a bit of a PITA...would it be a bad idea to try to cut a gasket to replace the O-ring?

2007 waits until water pump failure doesn't create a disaster

Damn. I ordered the cover before seeing your post of the correct way to fix this. I suppose I could return it for the cost of shipping...
