Heat relief for ’03-’05 riders? I know we have tried the Cromeit, stuffing insulation in the gaps, engine blankets, etc. All have or have not worked to one degree or another.

Riders coming over to the FJR from other platforms have had a very simple but elegant solution to heat and air flow control, Baker Air Wings. At this time Baker does not make anything for the FJR. But after tomorrow we may be buying a whole bunch of parts from them.

The Great and Powerful MNFJR05 is spending tomorrow with the Old but Wise One (my dad and kick-ass machinist!) to build a prototype mount for the FJR. I have tried a mockup using duct tape and cardboard of “air wings” that will mount on the mirror stems of FZ1 mirror equipped FJRs. The results were amazing! Air ducted around the fairing and right were it needs to go in sufficient volume and flow to keep the upper thighs and testicles at a comfortable temperature.

I have purchased a set of Baker Hand Wings for modification and will be creating a custom mount (that could be reproduced in quantity!) for a formal test tomorrow. This will allow for an adjustable wing that will reduce or increase airflow in the cockpit.

Stay tuned to this thread. I will be posting pictures tomorrow as soon as they are installed and they get a thorough test (it’s supposed to be 90+ here tomorrow so we will have a definitive answer!) :D

I hope they work. I would be very interested in a set of these if they don't mess up the look of the bike too much. Keep us posted.

Well, we are still at work. Our design is simple, two aluminum blocks, one mounted on the top of the mirror arm and the other bolted to that block providing the adjustment for the wing. We have machined the aluminum pillow blocks that will be mounted on the top of the stalks. We are in the process of machining the swivel blocks that will bolt to the pillow blocks and provide the angle adjustment for the airwing mounts. I have also discovered that I need to adjust (that means cut) the top angle of the handwing deflectors. Off to the store for a new cutting wheel to accomplish that task.

Here are the wings and their approximate mounting location. As you see the top angle needs to be adjusted to follow the mirror angle. As soon as we have ignition I will post more pics and results.

Count me in if it works; perhaps I could test one of your prototypes. Despite the extra tank insulation I currently use, I have recently been considering spraying a ceramic-based coating on the underside of the tank. Problem is, it's sold in 2 gal (can) quantities only at 190./each, plus you have to use a special sprayer, which is about 140. But, I'm just about at that point; getting tired of the first degree burns on the inner thighs (despite which riding pants I wear) in the S. Tx summer.
